The Turen Arts Quintette presents a bright snappy program mixing classical and pop songs, comedy and drama sketches, and crayon crayon pictures. Members include Josephine Gretlich, Burrows Caldwell, Vera MacKelvie, Freeman Hammond, and Florence Thorpe.
Geltoh Beers Company showcases three nationally renowned artists. Waldemar Geltoh leads the violin department at the University of Wisconsin and has performed across the United States and Canada. Tessie Izil Beers, coloratura soprano, and Mrs Geltoh, pianist, accompany with masterful technique as the National Day offerings feature songs from multiple nations.
The sole justice of the peace in Milton township is William Smith of Sterling. When R. E. McLeroy moved to Mansfield he did not resign, leaving the post effectively vacant. Abiton township trustees may declare the office vacant and appoint a replacement, though vacancy rules require a specified absence period to pass.
Frank C Brown of Akron was arrested for pressuring liberty bond buyers to sell to him at reduced figures. He faces federal prison time as the case proceeds.
Rittman council tightens dog control citing vicious animals roaming streets and a recent dog bite. The new muzzling and at large fines aim to enforce an old ordinance with $1 redemption and up to $10 penalties. An ordinance also moves funds to cover past sewer and payroll bills and bill payments for sewer work and related costs.
Mrs Oliver Fritz of near Rittman died about 2 PM at her home following complications in childbirth. The infant did not survive. She was 38, married to Oliver Fritz for 16 years. Surviving children are ages three, ten, and sixteen. the youngest is a girl. Funeral at Union Bethel Church Friday at 2 PM. burial in Sinnersburg cemetery.
Bishop S. H. Miller of Sugar Creek who edits a Mennonite paper was arrested in Cleveland on sedition charges for content alleged to hinder liberty bond sales and draft law operation. He was held on a $5,000 bond and faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.
An express train pulled by a tender derailed east of the Main Street crossing while traveling at about 70 mph. The engine was undamaged, a switch engine was used to reboard the rails, and no injuries were reported. The derailment barely avoided a worse outcome.
The Chautauqua program opens at Salyx on the 30th, inviting attendees to await the arrival of a local speaker. The event lasts six days with a schedule to be announced.
Medina officials considered allowing Rittman Gas and Fuel to raise rates from 26 to 35 cents after a meeting in Medina. Councilors sought audited company accounts and offered to review proofs in a special session, with residents likely to protest if the increase is granted.
Mayor Shattleford held a session Tuesday night disposing of riot related cases from July 4. George Mohoeil the Bulgarian pleaded guilty to intoxication and disorderly conduct, fined 10 dollars plus costs totaling 17 dollars. He paid and was released. John Downy the Irishman was jailed until he could pay but produced funds and paid his bill.
The Craston Journal laments the Erie and Wheeling railways repair needs at the union depot arguing the old depot is a blight on a small town. It suggests removing the structure and building a modern facility or even moving trains without stops, warning Rittman may establish a new cemetery as Creston suffers deathlike stagnation.
In Rittman Marshal Gox arrested Gerinaino Menepoce a Mexican national for failing to register for military service. He was jailed then transported to Wooster by Sheriff Miller and later returned to county jail. Menepoce admitted he had not registered though he had worked in Rittman for months and previously registered in Wooster.
Sune Martin Longsdorf died June 29 1444 at age 3 months and 7 days after a life shaped by service and work. He grew up in Southville Wayne county and was part of the Longsdorf family. He is survived by relatives and friends who valued his gentle nature and early faith. He is remembered as a devoted son and nephew with ties to Sterling and Southville communities.
The Rittman hall club extended its unbeaten home run with a victory over the Abram Cleck club of Akron. Rittman led 3 2 0 0 2 0 1 0 6 to 1 in a game that featured strong defense and timely errors by the visitors. Batter ies: Caskey and Long for Rittman Frouderman and a Mm min n for the Clarks.
Bror C. W. Clouse formerly of Rittman leaves the county school examiner post. Walter Fagley of Smithville is appointed by the county board of education to succeed him in August. Clouse will not teach for now and works at Home Building and Loan Co offices in Wooster.
