BOB WEST among Cleveland Indian supporters who stay up past midnight watching night games broadcast from the Stadium. They complain games have become too tense in the ninth inning to allow turning off the radio and sleeping quietly.

James Arthur Hughes infant son of Mr and Mrs Edward Hughes of Sterling died at Wadsworth hospital Tuesday morning. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 PM. Burial followed in Rittman cemetery with Ebert funeral home in charge.
City softball standings as of Tuesday July 15 show leading teams and win loss records. Key clubs include top contenders battling for postseason spots with several teams close in standings and several games remaining in the schedule.
Mayor Melvin Ritter and Harold Rich fished Lake Timagami 75 miles north of North Bay and boasted a ten pound northern pike. Rev W F Echols was photographed with another catch as Ralph Overholt took a picture. Two groups fished Lake Pennage near Whitefish, six miles from the road, with a seven pound walleyed pike as top prize.
A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Isaac Nayter north of Rittman on Saturday July 12 at Wadsworth Hospital. A son to Mr and Mrs Paul Abere g g of Doylestown on Monday July 7 at Wadsworth Hospital. A son to Mr and Mrs Howard Dannemiller of Doylestown on Friday July 4 at Wadsworth Hospital. A son to Mr and Mrs Charles Sigler Willow Brook on Friday July 11 at Wadsworth Hospital. A son to Mr and Mrs Robert Gardner on Saturday July 12 at Wadsworth Hospital. He weighed 10 pounds 12 ounces.
A head on collision on North Main Street near Home Street at 4 15 p m injured six people. Vehicles driven by Evan Evans of Wadsworth and James Rupp of Rittman collided when Evans attempted a left turn. Passengers Sofa Daykon and Timmy Rupp sustained serious injuries.
The Ohio Salt Co approved a general eight cent per hour raise for all employees in a contract with the union dated July 7, effective for one year from July 1, 1947. Skilled and unskilled positions saw rate adjustments, with some classifications gaining two to four cents hourly. Double time for six holidays and three paid holidays are included. Company negotiators were Charles Warner H S Squibbs and Wayne Young. Union members were A C Fackler Mike Serjack Lawrence Wilmot Fred Blatter George Haller and Russell Welling.
Albert Woyat 55 of R. D. 1 south of Rittman died in Crile hospital Cleveland Wednesday afternoon. He had been hospitalized since March after severe injuries from being dragged by a runaway team of horses. Survived by wife Hazel and fourteen children. He lived most of his life in the area, was a farmer, World War I veteran, and a member of the Rittman American Legion post. Funeral at St Annes Catholic church 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial in Dowlestown cemetery. Ebert funeral home in charge.
Mrs Louis Shiffer aged 58 of 58 Grant Street was injured Thursday afternoon when two girls riding a coaster wagon collided with her as she stepped into a drive to avoid them. The wagon struck her ankle causing a deep cut that required two stitches and left her unable to walk for several days.
Rittman representatives Gene Over and Robert Graber told the Lions club Monday about their Buckeye Boys State experiences. Gene served as a state patrolman and Bob as highway department inspector during the ten day camp. John Wenger noted selection by the American Legion and Rotary club and sponsors. Ladies night is set for July 21 with a dinner and program. Board meetings move to the first Monday monthly. ladies night occurs every other third Monday. August programs are by John Baldwin and Jim Hile.
Booster festival plans are nearly finished for August 8 on the high school football field. Chet Haulk announces Boyd Miller and Jack Daley as masters of ceremonies with an amateur show directed by Coach Ashton Hall. The program features a quintet with several acts, a piano solo, hillbilly songs, a lullaby segment, accordion selections, riding exhibition, a German band and drum majorettes, plus the Massillon band drill and concert. Tickets are available from Booster club members and local stores.
Village council heard from engineer C. B. Parrott that the county will share costs to replace the culvert on Sterling avenue. Council passed a resolution to advertise bids. Residents on Front street pressed for action while Mayor Ritter said the council lacks authority. An ordinance set 1948 1949 salaries: mayor 900 yearly clerk 720 treasurer 150 and councilmen 5 per meeting. A coming year budget was approved. The Mayor’s office collected 118 in June.
A meeting for bowlers is set at the Ideal Bowling alley on Thursday evening July 24 at 8 p.m. The gathering invites anyone interested in bowling during the coming season to attend.
