Island visit memories mix with kinfolk in July notes

Burnett to chair 1963 Rittman United Fund drive

Rittman United Fund Board named Lewis K Burnett as chairman of the 1963 fund raising campaign to be conducted in October. The first campaign in November of last year netted $14,246 for 10 agencies, exceeding the $10,500 goal. Burnett is noted for years of civic involvement and was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1961. He is a long-time Milton Presbyterian Church member and former leader in several local organizations and committees.

Housing Problem Still Faces School Board

Stentz Heads PCA Division in Grand Rapids Plants

E. L. Stentz is placed in charge of three Grand Rapids facilities of the Packag ing Corporation of America and will continue as plant manager. The move places the Grand Rapids paper mill, Brown Paper Stock Company, and ABCO Cartage under the paperboard division eastern mills.

Merchants Plan Summer Sales In Rittman

Merchants of the Rittman Chamber plan summer sales tied to funday recreation events. James Moore says stores will run individual weekend promotions July 18 to 20, with a big three day sale August 15 to 17 climaxing the event. Stores may stay open until midnight August 17 as part of the celebration.

Bank Resources Hit New High at Rittman Savings Bank

Rittman Savings Bank reports total resources reach 7.149 million as of June 30 1983, up 400000 from 1962. Capital funds total 634415. Bank paid a record 49815 in interest to savers for the first half of 1983. The period saw the new symbol of service on checks and the Handy Check program well received.

Burnett named head of campaign for Ohio boxboard leader

Burnett has a long career in paper and packaging rising from Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia in 1942 to assistant general plant manager at Packaging Corporation of America’s Rittman plant. Rhonemus praised his proven hard work and capability to drive the campaign.

Local man charged in death of Wadsworth teen

Alvin Polley of 214 Industrial Street is charged with reckless driving by the State Patrol in the death of 16 year old E Keyser. The fatal collision occurred Thursday night on Route 548 just south of Wadsworth when Keyser was struck by Polley’s car.

Frey asks rezoning land for six acre shopping center

Russell W Frey of Rittman asks Council to rezone two and a half acres for commercial use at East Sunset Drive and North Main Street to enable a six acre shopping center development by George Construction Company of Warren. The plan includes four stores led by a 14,000 square foot supermarket and first option leasing for locals. Council referred the request to the Planning Commission with a public hearing to follow.

Watershed Plan Lowers Cost to Property Owners

The Common Pleas Court at New Philadelphia approved amendments to the Chippewa Subdistrict plan of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. The new plan estimates local costs at 289000, down from 600000 in 1961, with expected benefits near one million dollars. A riverfront recreation plan for River Styx Lake Park totals 826500 plus dam costs, funded by bonds, Medina County, and the Soil Conservation Service. The park will include roads, facilities, and a small entry charge. appraisal rolls will determine benefited and damaged lands, with notices in Medina and Wayne counties forthcoming.

Budget hearing sets July 22 for city budget

City Manager Charles Mann presented a proposed budget with total expenditures of 328,196 dollars and a 10,413 dollar increase to operate the city next year. The street department gets the largest boost, 10,530 dollars, funding a new chimp truck and a street surface seal program. To cover rising costs, the council cut trash pickups and froze salaries. The last November election’s defeat prompted these cuts and the removal of street oiling for summer. Mann warned further cutbacks may come as the balance depletes. Other items: Mansfield Flooring to repair Washi Street and pave Nautilus Lane. residents urged to mow vacant lots or face fines up to 350 in Mayer's Court. a meeting next Monday on the Wayne County building code to harmonize local standards.
