Lawrence Wilmot and Ray Armbrust receive praise for their intense preparation work on Saturday afternoon to set up the event for the evening concert.
Mama Palomino appeared as a celebrated mare at a Saturday gathering, drawing petting from horse-loving kids of all ages while fans praised her gentle demeanor and popularity.
Ruth Ann Sipes, a three year-old girl, is described as a perfect winner with the blue eyed youngster and the golden colt. The report hints at a bright future as they grow together in racing and life.
Gene Stepfield began a new automatic dial telephone switchover in Doyles town when Sunday night storms disrupted lines. An engineer from Stromberg Carlson answered the first call saying House of David, David speaking.
The Maibach farming families of Sterling pooled four tractors and gear to plow a 12 acre hay field. They moved it, stored it in the barn by the second afternoon, then plowed and fitted overnight. By noon the third day 12 acres were planted in corn.
Last Friday I drove to Columbiana County near the Ohio River above Wellsville and found the Yellow Creek Presbyterian cemetery holding graves of four generations. The rank of McBane, McIntosh, MacGregor and McDonald is solid with no furriver among them.

Kenny Krancher plans to leave Rittman with a birthday honor as the town’s only boy to ride in the cab of the B and O diesel pulling the Akron Willard express. The birthday gift came last fall arranged by his father and the dash of 60 miles per hour thrilled residents.
The paper invites boys and girls to sign up with friends and neighbors, promising a deluxe bicycle as a prize.
About 1,000 people attended a band concert by the 30 piece American Federation of Musicians Akron Local 24, arranged by the Rittman Booster club in Orrville area. Ruth Ann Sipes won the palomino colt, and proceeds of roughly $300 fund the high school football field development.
The Press Publishing Co will be closed Friday and Saturday to observe the Fourth of July holiday. Printing for the week should be called for by Thursday afternoon. The Ritt man Press office will also be closed. News and advertising copy will be accepted again Monday July 7.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Faber on Wednesday, June 18. A son to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gavinesky on Monday, June 23. A son to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ferguson on Sunday, June 29. A daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey Adkins on Wednesday, June 18.
Russell Sprowl and Hershel Mellett are listed as having hospital notices at Wadsworth hospital on June 25 and June 26 respectively. A son to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ulm was born at Wadsworth hospital on June 26. Melvin Lee appears at Wadsworth hospital. A son to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Adams of Doylestown born at Wadsworth hospital on June 28.
The Missionary Interest Circle will gather with Mrs Leonard Lance on Thursday July 10 at 2 30 PM for a church group gathering and discussion.
A young raccoon clung to a utility pole near the Press last Thursday drawing a crowd. Ohio Public Service crew declined to intervene and the animal was coaxed down by Bob Adams with a pole and then released by C. H. Gordon back into open spaces.
The Ray Palmer house on Liberty Street was struck by lightning during a late Sunday electrical storm. Mr and Mrs Palmer were away when the bolt hit and shattered the chimney, tore shingles from the gable, and blew soot into the kitchen. No fire started, but bricks and splinters were thrown into the yard.
Rittman Merchants opened home season by splitting a Sunday doubleheader with Scott Paige Billiards of Akron. In game one Akron edged ahead 5-3 after a 2-0 start by Rittman, while game two saw a 9-4 win for the Merchants as eight first inning runs set the pace. Ruble and Garrad led with multiple hits. Shirley earned the win in game one and Perry took the loss.
A privately owned outdoor recreation center around water is planned for Rittman, per Merle Heffelman of 172 N Main St. He spoke to the Press on Tuesday while supervising draining of bogged land along Route 94 between River Styx and Shinersburg Road.
The Rittman Merchants meet the Ohio Boxboard in a Saturday 3:00 pm clash the first of three this season. Ohio Boxboard holds an edge having eight games to Merchants three. Fans may buy tickets at the gate and enjoy refreshments. Merchants also schedule two games with Sterling for the Fourth at Sterling.
After two weeks of play the city softball league tightens. In Friday’s game the Department Store stopped Spaulding 12 to 8 and Freed Ford beat Ben Franklin 7 to 3. Standings as of July 1 show Bells ahead with 2 wins, 0 losses, Department Store 2 1, Spaulding 1 1, Ben Franklin 1 2, Freed Ford 0 2, and Dairy 0 1.
Judges Hauenstein and Mougey presided over last week’s kite flying contest with grand prize to Junior McConnell. A repeat event is planned for Thursday July 3 at 1 pm on the school field. The note invites all to attend fun activities and upcoming tournaments.
Mr Heffelman and his father bought 28 acres last November from Mr Wolf of Akron. They claim the land is a hard clay bottom, usually waterlogged, fed by three springs. Water was pumped away toward Route 94 and the Erie railroad. A bulldozer will clear a basin for a lake and sand for a beach. Parking will be built on the south side, attracting motorists on Route 9. The site will be within walking distance of Rittman.
In Jack Williams absence John Baldwin chaired the meeting. The board passed a motion to file a claim against the carrier for damages to the Link Trainer in shipment. Supt. Hauenstein noted some salvage from the trainer and plans to surface the First St playground were discussed.
Rev C E Kerr director of Boys Village spoke to the Rittman man committee in the bank directors room outlining a fall drive for funds. D B Davidson was named chairman Ralph Krabill treasurer and Mrs Basil Hardgrove secretary. Nine boys are being cared for now with two new cottages planned to house 20 more. Small donations requested to cover operating expenses.
The fire department responded at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday to a motorcycle fire on Wright Street. The blaze was extinguished with little trouble but the motorcycle suffered considerable damage.
