Lightning Strikes Palmer Home in Severe Sunday Storm

The Ray Palmer house on Liberty Street was struck by lightning during a late Sunday electrical storm. Mr and Mrs Palmer were away when the bolt hit and shattered the chimney, tore shingles from the gable, and blew soot into the kitchen. No fire started, but bricks and splinters were thrown into the yard.

Merchants Split Sunday Doubleheader With Akron Billiards

Rittman Merchants opened home season by splitting a Sunday doubleheader with Scott Paige Billiards of Akron. In game one Akron edged ahead 5-3 after a 2-0 start by Rittman, while game two saw a 9-4 win for the Merchants as eight first inning runs set the pace. Ruble and Garrad led with multiple hits. Shirley earned the win in game one and Perry took the loss.

New Outdoor Recreation Center Planned Near Lake

A privately owned outdoor recreation center around water is planned for Rittman, per Merle Heffelman of 172 N Main St. He spoke to the Press on Tuesday while supervising draining of bogged land along Route 94 between River Styx and Shinersburg Road.

Merchants Box Fray Opens Series With Ohio Boxboard

The Rittman Merchants meet the Ohio Boxboard in a Saturday 3:00 pm clash the first of three this season. Ohio Boxboard holds an edge having eight games to Merchants three. Fans may buy tickets at the gate and enjoy refreshments. Merchants also schedule two games with Sterling for the Fourth at Sterling.

After two weeks of play the city softball league tightens. In Friday’s game the Department Store stopped Spaulding 12 to 8 and Freed Ford beat Ben Franklin 7 to 3. Heffelman Family Buy 28 Acre Site For Water Resort Near Rittman

Mr Heffelman and his father bought 28 acres last November from Mr Wolf of Akron. They claim the land is a hard clay bottom, usually waterlogged, fed by three springs. Water was pumped away toward Route 94 and the Erie railroad. A bulldozer will clear a basin for a lake and sand for a beach. Parking will be built on the south side, attracting motorists on Route 9. The site will be within walking distance of Rittman.

Board of Education to file damage claim

In Jack Williams absence John Baldwin chaired the meeting. The board passed a motion to file a claim against the carrier for damages to the Link Trainer in shipment. Supt. Hauenstein noted some salvage from the trainer and plans to surface the First St playground were discussed.

Rev Kerr Outlines Needs of Boys Village in Rittman Meeting

Rev C E Kerr director of Boys Village spoke to the Rittman man committee in the bank directors room outlining a fall drive for funds. D B Davidson was named chairman Ralph Krabill treasurer and Mrs Basil Hardgrove secretary. Nine boys are being cared for now with two new cottages planned to house 20 more. Small donations requested to cover operating expenses.

Motorcycle Fire Damages Vehicle on Wright Street

The fire department responded at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday to a motorcycle fire on Wright Street. The blaze was extinguished with little trouble but the motorcycle suffered considerable damage.
