Ike Conley humor column riffs on New Year vows and social quirks. Notes failed resolutions, bootlegger headlines, Belgium tragedy, a Chicago professor on cussing, a Columbus woman unconscious at the wheel, and a Kansas City mother tackling a speakeasy with an axe.
Rittman High School boys and girls beat Middlebranch in a doubleheader last Saturday after a flu related postponement with West Salem. Boys led 17-6 at halftime and 35-7 after the third quarter as Kunkler 19 and Yarman 13 powered the win. McAnaken and Grant tallied for Middlebranch. Girls excelled in free throws with seven successful shots, while the boys dominated with solid scoring throughout.
Rittman High School basketball squads have a packed weekend with Amithvyille and Doylestown on the schedule. Friday features a County League game at home for the Red and White, while Saturday the boys host Doylestown at 8 30 p.m. Rivalry runs high, and a close game is expected. The County League clash with Doylestown is set for February 8.
The Altar Guild of St Ann s Church held a card party in Branigan Block last Friday evening. Owing to illness the crowd was small. Prizes were awarded for euchre and bridge. Euchre winners included Mrs Goldie Yaman and Mrs Alpheus Goffinet. Joe Jakobiser, Harmon Rheyne, and M McIlvlaine won bridge. Ladies high Mrs J B Hickin, low Miss Mildred Gerberich. Gentlemen high Daniel Beck, low Harry Burger.
Attendees Dr C C Gregg Boyd Miller William Hershey and H B Squibbs attended the first annual Fort Laurens Avea Council Boy Scouts of America meeting at the Massillon YMCA Ohio Rev Hendrickson led the gathering Dr Gregg reported on a machine project to the Rotary Club at Thursday luncheon Next Monday night four local Scouts will receive second class degrees for the event program at the YMCA house program leadership by Rev Hendrickson.
Tex Rickard, renowned sports promoter, died in Florida after surgery for gangrenous appendicitis. His burial in a lavish $15,000 casket reflects his prominence and wealth.
Mrs. Riggs wife of Shirley Riggs died shortly after midnight Tuesday from fever linked to childbirth with bronchial complications. She lived with her parents on State 81 and recently moved from West Virginia. Mother of three, two died earlier. four year old daughter survives with husband and parents. Body prepared by Hbert Undertaking Parlors and shipped to West Virginia. She was about 31.
Wayne County dairy farmers with the aid of their cows can raise incomes and help meet Ohio demand for butter. Ohio consumed 60,000,000 pounds of western butter last year while per capita use rose to 20 pounds. Wayne County ranks tenth in cream production for butter making as industry ties grow for graded cream purchases.
The Wayne County Christmas Seal Committee apologizes to those who received reminder cards but not the seals. The rush to place seals in the mall caused some names to be overlooked due to late supplies. A sales report will appear in next week’s The Rittman Press.
A. M Bechtel, 77, of the Wooster area, was found dead in his bed at 6 30 Tuesday morning after a heart attack the previous evening. The death shocked his family. He was the father of M W Bechtel, a former Rittman restaurateur, who is traveling in the West.
William Fetter aged 72 died at his home in Welleraville from pneumonia. A well known carpenter in the county, he was the father of Mrs. Joli Looser of Rittman. Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 in Union Paradise Church with interment in Paradise Cemetery.
Henry Y Burkhardt, 86, died at 9 30 Tuesday morning at his home southwest of Orrville from influenza and complications. He was the father of John Burkhardt who lives north of Rittman.
Superintendent G A Gibbons after consulting Prosecutor Walter Mougey sent letters to Wayne County schools urging children to aid the search for Melvin Horst a 44 year old Orrville boy missing for two weeks. Authorities use airship piloted by Jack Boettner Akron along with detectives Ora Slater Cincinnati to pursue leads as grand jury handles suspected kidnappers Arnold family. Hanna and Johnson boys detained as witnesses at Children's Home amid baffling disappearance.
The Child Conservation Club met at Mrs. Kari Derhammer's home on Btate 8t Monday evening. The group reviewed reports, heard papers on baby care and nursery planning, and announced the next meeting for January 21 at Mrs. W J Clark's home with planned participants W Bodager C R Parkinson and Hari Derhammer.
The Romesberg Trio will perform at the First Brethren Church of Rittman during the evening service next Sunday at 7 30. They will sing old-fashioned songs such as A Beautiful Land, followed by a sermon by the pastor. Radio listeners can hear Rev Sibert and the First Brethren Sunday School Orchestra on Daddy Dods Good Will program over WADC Akron next Sunday from 2 to 4.
The W. C. T. U plans its January meeting at Mrs. Harpster’s home on Tuesday afternoon January 15 at four o'clock. Mrs. Slater, a state worker, will speak to honor the ninth anniversary of prohibition. Special music is arranged and all members and others interested are invited to attend.
Miss Edith Guthrie a Wooster College freshman entertained sixteen college friends Wednesday evening with a birthday dinner. The event featured a pink color scheme and coordinated favors reflecting the celebratory mood.
The Rittman Rotarians heard a talk by Mr. Boheim a missionary from India at a luncheon this week Thursday. He is a former missionary and has served in the field for 17 years.
Tuesday evening about 630 the fire alarm sounded and the fire department arrived at the Charles Pocto home east of town. An overheated stove ignited the chimney flames which were confined to the chimney and no damage occurred beyond smoke.
W L Good of Good & Bickster Store Rittman Ohio says the modern merchant must attend the Chicago furniture market January 9 at the American Furniture Mart to study styles and trends for 1929 homes and housewives. He notes the mart hosts over 700 manufacturers and five miles of showrooms with master craftsman designs.
The four year old daughter of Mrs. Pearl Faber was badly burned on Monday while playing with a box of matches. She leaned to close the box to see the picture and the matches ignited burning her face and neck.
A fire gutted the Fred Geiser tenant property about two miles northeast of Marshallville on Monday. Cause undetermined. The building was insured. Fred Geiser Jr., brother of Pad Geiser of Rittman, was associated with the property.

The annual meeting of Rittman Savings Bank stockholders was held Wednesday afternoon at the bank. The old board of directors was re-elected and the same officers will serve for another year. A report to stockholders notes strong growth over the past year.
