Mayor Ashton pushes a no smoking rule for City Council chambers as councilors gather Monday. Hall jokes that his proposal has gone up in smoke while sessions reveal smoky room conditions and lingering blue haze. Diverson Hall hosts a Junior Mothers Club guidance talk with speaker William Cecil.
Rittman Cub Scouts prepare for their annual Pinewood Derby next Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Rittman High School gym with trophies from the Lions Club for fastest car, best design, and runner-up. Prelims are Saturday 2 to 4 p.m. at Diversion Hall with weights checked and cars returned to Bob Bodager. judge Ray Mullett and starter Richard Clemmer to oversee.
The tenth annual minstrel show begins rehearsal this Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the band room at Rittman High School. All are welcome to participate as the production runs March 12 13 14.
Services were held Tuesday for Roy Bendel Sr., 74, father of Mrs. Anna Jean Wilson and Marvin Bendel of Rittman. He died unexpectedly Saturday in Wadsworth where he had lived 35 years, after a career as an ink mixer for Sinclair and Valentine of Rittman. He was a member of Wadsworth Baptist Temple. Surviving are his wife Alice, three other sons Cecil, Russel and Rev Roy Bendel Jr., all of Wadsworth, and 18 grandchildren. Burial was in Wadsworth with Rev Al Rudolph officiating.
Holiday visitors over the weekend included Ruth and Clyde Eckhart and Jean and Richard from Battle Creek Michigan, guests of Frank and Delphine Hisem, former Rittman residents.
Funeral services were held today for William Alleshouse 70 of Shanesville after a short illness at Canton Aultman Hospital. He is survived by wife Anna. children William Jr. of Shanesville Mary Schrock of Dover Myra Jones of Dundee. a son Walter and an infant daughter preceded him in death. Burial followed in Shanesville.
Patrolman Marvis Carmichael has returned from Wadsworth Municipal Hospital and is recovering from back injuries, cuts, and bruises after a Christmas morning crash on Route 94 south of Rittman. He underwent X rays of the back chest and pelvis and stayed in traction for several days.
The City Council closed the year by buying a dump truck from Don K. Freed Agency at 4425 dollars and approving a new police cruiser ad plus a traffic light control section for College Street North Main Street at 550 dollars. They set maintenance for ditch rip-rap, relocate a sewer interceptor, discuss paving North Main Street, approve treasurer salary up to 100 dollars monthly, reappoint Tip Shook to the Cemetery Board, and name Wayne Ferrer to Planning Commission and Willard Hilty to Civil Service Commission. Planning and shopping center work is slated to begin in April with Kréger building ready Sept 1.

Pastor Bob Chambers of the Church on 94 moves to The Church of Christ in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, to begin a new post this week. He and his family moved to Rittman six years ago to start the congregation, which met in Union Hall before relocating to a basement building on Route 94. Chambers began duties January 1, and his final sermon cited St. Paul’s farewell to the elders of Ephesus.
An overheated furnace at the residence of G. Fi. Clippinger on South Main Street prompted a 5 p.m. alarm. The Rittman Volunteer Fire Department contained the blaze to the area above the furnace, causing about 500 dollars in damages from smoke and fire.
The fifth annual Twelfth Night tree burning will be held Monday at the Industrial Street recreation grounds, with the Rittman Chamber of Commerce and the Rittman Ministerial Association organizing. The event starts at 6:30 PM and the fire department will supervise. Local pastors will lead invocation and benediction, and residents are asked to place trees on tree lawns for pickup Thursday and Friday by the city.
The second half of 1963 features RAID and Packaging Corporation expansions in Rittman plus zoning moves by Milton Township Trustees. Local politics see council debates over a Green River Ordinance and zoning, while a flood of civic events includes weddings, anniversaries, school and library activities, sports victories, and progress on a new shopping center Three and a half acres are rezoned for a North Main Street project and a shopping center.
