Rittman Indians drop 45 44 to Millersburg as Spartans cash seven of 13 free throws to seize the Central Buckeye League crown race. Orrville clinches the title with no league losses while Rittman can only finish second.
The teenage dance committee sponsors the second annual Student Ball at the High School on February 25. Music by Roger Lehman and his orchestra. Dancing starts at 8 30 and attire is semi formal.
George Buckingham 59 of West Main Ashland died suddenly of a heart attack while driving on Route 47 north of Rittman. State Patrol says George Ricker riding with him averted a crash by regaining control. Buckingham, brother in law of Ross Rich and Honor Rich of Wooster, is survived by wife Has tel and son Weldon both of Ashland and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday with burial in Ashland cemetery.
The School Board awarded Horvath Nurseries of Cleveland a $222000 contract for landscaping the new school grounds and Cyclone Fencing Co a $76.00 fencing contract. Superintendent Haudenstein plans to attend the American Association of School Administrations meeting in Atlantic City. Industrial Arts teacher Eli Stolfus will attend the Ohio Industrial Arts Conference in Columbus. A Wayne County Ministerial Association program commemorated Brotherhood Week with messages of unity among White, Negro, and Jewish races.
Mr and Mrs Russell Ott plan to attend the Chicago Trade and Beauty Show the week of March 6. Isaac Maibach Sterling spent Wednesday in Cleveland on business.
Rittman plans a formal overhaul of licenses and permits for building plumbing and electrical work after hiring a new executive assistant to the village clerk. Examinations will be required and licenses issued to individuals, not firms, with permits now needed for any construction over 50 dollars.
H L Davidson the Ben Franklin in Rittman unveiled a new self serve system, the first in a small town dime store. Turnstiles and clear signage guide shoppers as customers select items and pay at the cashier, with floorwalkers on duty to answer questions and speed service.
The Lions Club has secured the Legion Home for a Blue and Gold Banquet Tuesday February 28 at 630 PM to honor Scouting’s Fortieth Anniversary. The event replaces the usual City Hall pack meeting and invites all parents ministers and the public to attend.

Preparations for the annual Red Cross drive start next Wednesday March 1 at 2 00 p m at United Brethren church with Rev Eugene Burton as general chair and address to the group Mrs Whren Bodager and Mrs John Fisher are co chairs Team captains include Clarence Inkler and many local residents who will select solicitors for their neighborhoods.
