The Rittman Board of Education met February 15 at 8 p.m. Tim Rose, for a student committee, urged drastic changes to allow the choir to go to the district contest. Proposals included hiring a temporary teacher, using a student teacher, juggling schedules, or enlisting Gary Kleptach to assist music staff.
A two week seminar at Rittman High School explores Black Studies from African heritage to Black Power. Students include Jim Chiampo and Julie Salyer with guest lecturer Gene Scruggs of Akron Board of Education, while other classes study ecology and criminology.
Council chambers heard Roy Moffet and J E Pequignot explain United Telephone’s plan to close the Rittman office and standardize 200000 billings via a 360 computer system located in Mansfield. The move aims to improve efficiency rather than save money, with calls rerouted to Orrville and toll free.
Floyd H Hoover 73 of RD1 Rittman died Wednesday morning at Wadsworth Rittman Hospital after a long illness. Born Feb 13 1897 in Rittman to George and Lydia Steiner Hoover he lived here all his life. An Electrician for Morton Salt Co 40 years he retired in 1962 and was a former deacon trustee moderator and Sunday school teacher and a charter Morton Salt Credit Union member. Surviving are two sons Harold and Wayne three daughters Annabel Armstrong Marian Baldwin and Carolyn McElroy four sisters Blanche Moomaw Minnie Cassell Pearl Clippinger and Grace Reynolds and 19 grandchildren. Services were held Saturday at 1:00 pm at the First Brethren Church with Rev Charles W Turner and Rev Robert A Russell officiating Burial was in Rittman Cemetery.
Rev Robert A Russell assumed duties as pastor of First Brethren Church at 44 S First St in February He is a Woodbury Pennsylvania native and Grace Theological Seminary graduate He previously led Altoona Brethren Church and held roles with the National Fellowship of Brethren Churches He and wife Constance Walter reside at 50 Ruttman Road with two daughters Michelle Elaine and Bobbi Nicole and he expresses eagerness to meet the community and serve.

A fire at the First Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon at 4:47 pm caused grease leakage in the kitchen. Estimated damage ranges from three to five thousand dollars, mainly smoke damage to the kitchen and meeting room. Rittman fire department responded with 22 men.
Mrs Marvin Adams to chair the 1971 Heart Fund appeal in Rittman with Mrs Clayton Hange announcing. Heart Sunday is Feb 21, while volunteers will canvass February 15 to 28. District captains include Karolyn Kollert Don Hougian Richard Britton Esther Polk James Schorle Emma Geyer Loretta Lively Charles Isaac John Farlow Merle Tomlinson Warren Hardgrove James Steiner Robert Wenger Carl Maslak and Mrs William Maus oversees businesses and Edith Jones schools. Proceeds aid Wayne County Heart Association research education and community services. Sterling Mothers Club meets Feb 18 with devotions by Mrs Jaquet.
