Rittman residents faced sandbag shortages as city officials could not honor a request to bury a backyard. Local notices share hospital visits, surgeries, and recoveries at Wadsworth Rittman, Orrville, and Columbus facilities, plus birthday and anniversary greetings among area families. Boy Scout Troop 410 opened Scout Week with a family dinner and Court of Honor at Milton United Presbyterian Church. Seventy scouts and family members gathered as awards went to Jeff Hisem and Rastorfer, with new seniors and patrol leaders named.
Roy Lutz presided at his first meeting as president of the Rittman Chamber of Commerce after a special election. New officers include Dr. William Walker vice president Donald Houglan treasurer and Mrs Kenneth Hilty secretary. Committees appointed name John Zivick industry chairman Warren Keister merchants chairman with John Lehman Ken West and Houglan assisting. David Hill to chair government, Dr. Walker professional. Meetings set for first Tuesday monthly at 745 am at Williams Restaurant. A welcome note to new residents was approved and a membership drive planned.
Cremation rites were held this week in the Panama Canal Zone for Porter Crawford husband of Mary Brenneman of Rittman. He died Jan 31 after a yearlong illness. Son of Jay and Mamie Crawford he moved from Seville area to Margarita Canal Zone. He worked for Ohio Farmers Insurance Co Le Roy before moving to Panama where he served the government 25 years. Survived by wife two sons James Ypsilanti Michigan and Charles Fort Benning Georgia and three grandchildren. Mail to Mrs Crawford Margarita Box 34 Panama Canal Zone.
Rittman Savings Bank will close Monday February 12 in observance of Lincoln's birthday per announcement by Allan J Broadhurst executive vice president.
An organizational meeting for the Toastmasters Club will be held Tuesday February 13 at 8 pm in the community social room of Rittman Savings Bank. Kenneth Ream and Merle Shisler will speak. John Lehman and Macauley Gosney can provide information.
Kent State University will bring its madrigal singing group and an instrumental trio to Rittman High School on Monday February 26 at 8 pm for a Fine Arts Foundation concert. Fine Arts president Mrs Ar says the presentation will be held this week with strong local attendance expected.
Snow and rain triggered street floods and water pressure problems around Rittman. Fire, street, and sewer crews labored for days to drain basements and protect a city well while rumors spread of contaminated water amid a flu outbreak. Health officials tested water daily and urged calm as crews repaired a Friday water main break.
Rittman Jaycees announce a busy spring slate with multiple events and community outreach activities. Leaders say the schedule features engaging programs designed to boost local participation and youth involvement throughout the season.
Sterling PTA schedules a smorgasbord eatery from 5 to 9 pm in the school auditorium with a snow date Feb 17. JAYCEE membership drive ends with a fish dinner Feb 22 at the JA building led by Kenneth Selbee. Battle of the Bands runs three to four nights this spring at Rittman High School with a Meyers Lake Canton final.
The PTA in Rittman will meet Thursday at 7 30 PM at Rittman High School to hear a program on Sex Education in Modern Times. Dr and Mrs Raymond Jo Mc Mahon Jr of Massillon present the program. Free literature will be available, door prizes, and refreshments after the meeting.
Rittman Jaycees announce facilities at the Junior Achievement building 11 North State for senior citizen activities. A meeting is scheduled for Saturday February 10 at 2 p.m. The building offers a woodworking shop dark room equipment ceramic equipment printing press and tables for card games. Citizens are invited to join with friends for activities.
Sterling Farm Equipment hosts its Annual Pancake Festival on Thursday February 15 offering pancakes and sausage from morning until afternoon. Guest speaker Ralph Wiley of Marion Correctional Institution will address attendees at 1 p.m. Wiley oversees 200 boys and is a noted speaker. The event showcases 1963 small farm and lawn tractors and a rider lawn mower. Dale Wirth serves as secretary of Sterling Farm Equipment.
