The Morton Salt Employees Credit Union holds its annual membership meeting on Thursday February 11 1971 at 6 30 p m at Terrace Gardens Barberton Ohio Members and spouses may buy tickets until February 8 from officials President Homer J Lowe Vice President Ken Leatherman Treasurer Rittman. The event includes reports elections a speaker Craig Wilson Akron Beacon Journal Action Line editor dinner and twelve door prizes.
Victor Holland was elected to the board and Ben Bodager was re elected for a three year term at the United Fund annual meeting on Wednesday January 27. Officers elected for the coming year include President Robert Pait Vice President Robert Gillman and Secretary Treasurer Mrs Ralph Gwaltney. The fund remains $1496 short of its $20500 goal. Robert Meade retired from the board and received a bronze statue.
Ohio’s Costs Per Pupil totaled 677.87 with 24 million students statewide while Rittman spent 533.54 per pupil. Wooster 707.05, South Central 587.04, Southeast Local 579.94, Dalton Local 574.96, Northwestern Local 551.53, Greene Local 542.78. State Superintendent Martin W Essex says the data aids planning and resource allocation.
The United States salt and brine industry grew to a 300 million dollar annual enterprise in 1970 with Morton Salt Company a leading producer. Output reached 46.1 million tons, up 4 percent from 1969, valued at about 306 million. Louisiana and Texas dominated production, and 1969 rock salt use rose 15 percent for roadwork. Two local accident injuries and a funeral notice for Atlee Hostetler are also recorded.
The Chamber of Commerce endorsed American Society for Quality Control Quality Week with officers Dee Freed Tom Flynn and Bob Gillman backing the plan. Al Imhoff urged support, noting benefits for Rittman. A future forum with School Board and City Council was proposed, to be held in Middle School Gymnasium for informal public discussion. The chamber also moved its annual membership drive to March 1 to avoid clashing with a cleanup drive.
Mrs Helen Steiner 53 of 45 Fifth St died January 27 at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital after a heart attack at home. Born August 7 1917 near Sterling she lived in the Rittman Sterling area. She taught from 1937 to 1967 at Rittman High School and later at North Ridgeville Middle School. Survived by husband Charles mother Neva Murray four brothers and three sisters. Services January 30 Gillman Funeral Home with burial in Rittman Cemetery. Merry Mixers meet February 10 at Kathrine Bruny’s home.
Robert Stoll of Rittman was elected president of the Wayne County Joint Vocational School at the reorganizational meeting January 25. Board members named for two year terms ending December 31, 1972 were Dale Wirth Sterling, Mrs Janet Van Dorne Wooster, Robert Stoll Rittman, and Harold Miller Shreve. The board approved Supt William Hauenstein and Director Robert Zimpfer to attend the American Association of School Administrators convention in Atlantic City. Robert West of Rittman has been past president of WCJVS.
