The Sterling team defeated Avons Akron 22 to 20 in a tightly fought game. Sterling led early and held an 11 point lead at half despite a late Akron rally, with Glenville ME poised to challenge next.
A special school board meeting at the high school discussed details of a new building to be erected this summer. The exact site on the grounds is undecided. Friday the bids will be opened for a $110,000 bond issue and that evening Auto Club directors will meet with the board at the high school for mutual benefit.
The local K of P lodge plans a second floor club room in the Sigler block. A room was rented and furniture slated for placement last week. The addition will give members a place to read write and enjoy amusements. The lodge has a large and growing membership with many new arrivals. The article also notes a birthday gathering for Mrs John Peterson hosted by her daughter-in-law with friends joining in a pleasant evening and lunch.
The Rittman Orchards directors meeting at the W R Shock lumber office discussed expanding planting to 1500 more peach trees this spring. The firm owns 145 acres and aims to reach 15 000 trees to maturity before marketing.
The January 1 Grange program opened with a song by the Grange family and closed with a performance. Junior Mc Connell gave a recitation. Mrs Metonuoedl spoke on Home Economies in Clothcraft. LaVerne Steele led varied views and a general discussion on Hor Lughes. A Lincoln birthday event is planned for February 9 with a roll call and a debate on solving major problems led by Kent Carnahan and Jocy Scharer.
Mrs Joseph Bussom spent Sunday and Monday with her son in Cleveland where John Ganter returns from Mansaillon to join the Doylestown Aluminum Co as planner. The company has many orders. Mr and Mrs William Nichter will celebrate their silver anniversary on Sunday February 4 at their Wadsworth home with 75 invitations, dinner at 11:30, music and games for children. Mrs Nichter is the daughter of Francis Whitman of Doylestown.
John Schorger formerly town marshal of Rittman has been missing for about two weeks. Friends say no one knows his whereabouts after he appealed a divorce decree won by Mrs. Schorger in common pleas court. He may have left without leaving details, and even close friends do not disclose his location.
Mrs. Ervin C. C. Rich expresses gratitude to friends for flowers fruit candy and other tokens received during her stay at Worcester hospital.
Charlotte Mourey has been appointed and qualified as administratrix of the estate of Raymond Ross Mourey in Wayne County Ohio. Probate Judge Charles C. Jones of Wayne County, Ohio signs the notice.
The Parent-Teacher Association met in the high school auditorium on Tuesday evening to discuss child training at home led by Mrs Rahbrook. The orchestra performed, reports were given by the purchasing committee, and visitors toured the newly equipped rest room and domestic science kitchen area overseen by Miss Steiner.
Mrs Daniel Huff an 82 year old resident near Sterling suffered a stroke while in bed. Neighbors and relatives anxiously await news on her condition as her family reports she remains seriously ill.
In 1923 the Stuttman Automobile Club, scarcely a year old, is recognized as an influential local body. The slogan calls every automobile owner to join and every member to booster. If you own a car and have not joined, it is your duty to join at once. If you are a member, boost. If not a member, do not knock.
Ellen Miller reports the first anniversary of her mother’s death as Jan 31. The Rittman area notes several neighbors and residents hospitalized this week for operations and births including Mrs Verne Gobhart at Wadsworth, Mrs Hubert Squibbs at Akron, and Mrs L L Haney at Wooster, with all patients improving.
The Hoy Route entertained scouts at headquarters with knot tying and bandaging drills led by Scout Master Ward. Edward Radenbaugh and William Quainer starred in the head bandage scene while Robert Mivhotw handled finger and limb wraps.
At a public affairs board meeting the Supt of Water Works Mr Houseworth was proposed a ten dollar monthly salary increase to 160 dollars if approved by the village council. The increase would include ten dollars for gas used in his auto. The board preferred purchasing gas rather than furnishing a company car.
Master Dale Aurand two year old son of Mr and Mrs Gault Aurand died this Thursday morning at 9 30 from a complication of pneumonia influenza and whooping cough. He had pneumonia two weeks and had recently battled malaria fever later contracting whooping cough. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
Mr and Mrs Wm Burbage entertained six children Saturday evening at Grant Street for Theodore "Ted" Burbage's birthday anniversary. Guests included Kathryn Callahan Loretta Rizor Edna Ashbrook Foster Baker Harry Lehman and the host. Games and refreshments amused and satisfied the guests.
Mr Ward W Sigler has been chosen as principal of the Junction City High School in Ohio. He is expected to be a capable leader and the position carries a good salary. He attended Wooster College several years before entering Ohio State University a few years ago.
The Pythian Sisters social scheduled for Feb 7 is postponed to Feb 21 due to special meetings at U B church. Signed Maud Newman M E B C.
