Father Liederbach recalls a child’s note in a St. Ann Church Christmas envelope asking to give 79 cents more to reach a dollar. He compares it to the widow’s two copper coins. Home for the holidays is Melvin Raper, returning to Fort Polk, La. from the Army. Belated wedding anniversary for Harry and Marie Walker. Numerous local birthday and anniversary wishes and cards planned for the week.
Rittman community reports a busy period with re election and leadership changes at local unions and schools, renovations, and new programs. A fire damages the maintenance building, and $1,000 in damage is estimated.
Wayne County Juvenile Court Judge Leo Kindsvat ter ruled 16 year old Larry Green of Sterling innocent of a charge following the shooting death of his father Andrew Green 55 on the evening of December 7. The judge ruled the death justifiable defense and the boy was released to his family after detainment in county jail since December 7.
The Duane E. Acker residence at 19 Circle Drive was named first place in the Christmas lighting contest by the Chamber of Commerce. Second place went to Ercil Robinson of 240 Rufener and George R. Kelley of 325 Diane. Over 516 homes decorated across 68 streets with full lighting. Honorable mentions to Wallace Berfer at 94 and 604, Melvin Emch at 294 Mennonite Road, and Emil Firis on county road 70.
Graveside services were held Friday at Rittman Cemetery for Karen Ann Rohrer infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Dale Rohrer of Warren. She died at birth Wednesday at Barberton Citizens Hospital. Survivors include three brothers Kevin Karl and Kurt and paternal grandmother Mrs Mary Rohrer of Rittman. Gillman Funeral Home handled arrangements. Rev James E Watt officiated.
Jaycees including 28 Region VIII chapters will supply and secure building materials for Camp Echoing Hills in Coshocton County Bedford Township. Project head Ken Selbee says crews will handle sheet ing and shingles as the camp expands to include ten new cabins and a nurse’s station. Regional chair Clayton Miller coordinates the effort with aim to help 80 children weekly once finished.
Citizens are invited to submit letters nominating a Citizen of the Year for 1969. Mail to Mrs. Skip Hilty, Box 336, Chamber of Commerce, by Jan 22. The 19th annual award will be announced at a Chamber dinner Jan 29, with criteria including past and current achievements.
City manager Robert Trimble says Christmas trees will be collected Monday and Tuesday January 5 and 6. Trash collection for the city will occur on Wednesday.
Local chamber invites all interested persons to attend the monthly meeting held on the first Tuesday morning at 7:45. The venue is marked as a restaurant in the Chamber district, and attendees are urged to join discussions on community affairs.
