Fire Causes $4,000 Damage at Home on Hickin Avenue
Fire gutted parts of Xavier Brandt’s home at 72 South Hickin Avenue with an estimated 4000 dollars in damage. Fire Chief Ronald Goodhart said the cause is undetermined. Brandt escaped through a back bedroom window and notified the department as two fire trucks fought the blaze for about an hour and a half.

Pick Up Trees For 12th Night Jan. 4-5
The Twelfth Night program on January 5 will conclude Christmas with a tree burning near Industrial Street and tennis courts at 6 30 p m. Sponsored by the Rittman Ministerial Association and the Chamber of Commerce, Rev Doyle Miller will give the invocation and Rev James Watt will lead the benediction. Rev F D Donaldson will discuss the occasion’s significance as the Three Wise Men visit the Infant Jesus, with Christmas music by the Rittman High School chorus and band. After the program, volunteer firemen will direct the tree burning. City trucks will collect Christmas trees on January 4 and 5, or residents may bring trees to Industrial Street 15 minutes before the program. Unsold trees from nearby vendors are being delivered to the scene.

New Recreation and Planning Commission Members Appointed
Council named new members to the Planning Commission and Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission at a special session. Terms run one to three years starting Jan 1, 1961, with City Manager Charles Mann and Vern Yoho among appointees. The Planning Commission will review two local allotments and Mann announced fleet insurance and a faithful performance bond. Water analyst Merrill Riehl will visit Rittman in January amid odor concerns.

The Secretary of State issued a proclamation designating January 4 as the day Rittman loses its village status and becomes a city. The Rittman Press will publish a special history section with photos dating to 1892, available as keepsakes for residents and former residents.

A crowd of 1,050 watched the Rittman Indians defeat the Northwestern Huskies 54-45 to extend their unbeaten streak to six straight scalp. Gary Gott sparked the Indians with steals and assists while Dave Bernhardt and Tom Bodayer helped fend off Northwestern’s comeback.

Historical Society Receives Charter for Rittman Venue
The Rittman Historical Society gained its incorporation charter enabling it to accept title to the Knupp Church building in the Municipal Cemetery. Directors include G Howard Clippinger, Ralph J. Krabill and Bessie Schumacher Clippinger. The group will seek pledged funds from local families and businesses for restoration, with a new roof and essential repairs planned as weather allows. The 125 year old structure was built by early settlers.

Ellis Death At Packaging Plant In Industrial Commission Report
The state Industrial Commission completed its inquiry into Fred Ellis death at the Packaging Corporation of America Plant on December 21. Ellis drowned after falling into a large water and pulp fiber vat guarded by a shoulder high railing and an 18 inch curb. No witness saw the accident start, but it is surmised he toppled through a feed opening while handling a large roll of paper.

Bodager of Rittman is elected president for 1961 by the Wayne County Board of Realtors. He has served as vice president this past year.
