Fire call scuttles car blaze. minor damage reported
Rittman Fire Department responded to a Thursday afternoon car fire on S Main Street with only minor damage. Close notice: the Rittman public library will close at 5 p.m Friday December 31 1954 and reopen at 3 p.m Monday January 3 1955.

Winners in the fifth annual Chamber of Commerce home lighting contest were announced today. First prize of 20 dollars went to Frank E. Burns of 34 Bellvae Ave. Second and third prizes of 10 and 5 dollars were awarded to Andréw Banders of Ohio Ave and Clyde Ambrose of Fairmont Ave. Judges were James M Hile and Mr and Mrs Ralph Overholt.

Mr and Mrs W B Hurt celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary quietly at home on December. Nellie G Hays of McComb and W B Hurt of Glenforks Ky were married in McComb on December 27 1904. They moved to Montana and later to Rittman in 1937.

Reunited With Wife and Son After 14 Years
George Pribregovich, a former front line serviceman captured by Germans in World War II, is reunited with his wife and 13 year old son Dusban who arrived from Europe on December 18. Since settling in Rittman in 1950 he worked for Ohio Boxboard Co. and built a house, fulfilling his long awaited dream.

Hile Motor Sales Employees Entertained at Bermuda Trip
Mr and Mrs Hile hosted the staff of Hile Motor Sales and guests at Smithville Inn. Ladies received carnations and perfume from Bermuda, and the group gave gifts to the Hiles. The event featured colored moving pictures of the Bermuda trip.

Former Resident Jay Royston Dies in Elyria Hospital
Funeral services were held for Jay Royston 64 formerly of Rittman and Sterling. He died Wednesday at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Survivors include brothers Harold Rich of Rittman and Empeth Nichols of Creston.

Police blotter details multiple holiday arrests and crashes
Police reports from the holiday period show several drunk driving and related offenses. Robert Cardwell was fined 100 dollars for driving while intoxicated plus costs after arrest December 19 in Mayor Baldwin’s court. Press Advances at Rittman Press in 1954 Modernizes Printing
The Rittman Press expanded in 1954 by adding a Model 14 linotype a faster folding machine and modern typefaces to improve newspaper printing. Eight new paper size metal tables and a posting bookkeeping machine increased efficiency. The plant earned wide recognition at a June meeting in Rittman with Wright Bryan of the Cleveland Plain Dealer as keynote. Additional weekly papers were brought to Rittman to print weekly, boosting production and payroll to over 55 thousand dollars annually with 15 full time and 20 part time workers.

At a pre Christmas session the Rittman village council voted to pay 12.50 per helmet for twelve safety helmets for the volunteer fire department. The meeting also considered an eight dollar first hour volunteer rate and discussed street repairs with Hus and fuel gas crews.
