Delane E Bowman a decade long Scout leader expresses pride in memories and service. His son Butch joined the Navy while Bowman serves Troop 405 and Akron Area Council committees. He lives with wife Billie Jean at 83 East Ohio and holds union roles with Carpenter Local Medina and Floorlayer Local Akron.
Frank Tennessee Whittaker age 48 of Rittman is hospitalized after a shooting at Bennie McCormick's Canal Fulton home where Whittaker and McCormick were involved in an argument over Whittaker's estranged wife. Whittaker and his son were also injured.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services are planned in Rittman area churches. St Ann Roman Catholic Church hosts carols and a 11 pm service with 3 to 6 pm confessions. Milton United Presbyterian holds an 8 pm communion with Pastor James Watt on John 1 1 8. Sterling Evangelical United Brethren offers an 8 pm candlelight service using the Ritual of the Lights. Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran at Acme has an 8 pm service. Details appear on the church page.
John D. Kocsis of 123 Hickin will demonstrate at the Rittman recreation art classes on Wednesday January 4 at 7 30 PM at Rittman city hall. The public is invited. Kocsis teaches art and design for Packaging Corporation of America and has served as an art instructor in Berea City Schools. He holds an education degree from Ohio State University and is pursuing a master of arts at Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Institute of Art. Lessons cost 2 dollars per session and new students may register anytime among weekly Wednesday sessions at the Rittman shopping center arcade. Robert Barnes remains instructor, with experience in composition color theory and drawing. He has taught across Ohio including Akron Medina Wooster and Zanesville areas and painted the Zane Trace Trail in South Ohio. Barnes donations and exhibitions include work in New York Paris Ohio and Florida.
John Walker Michael Serjack and Alvaro Fackler will retire from Morton Salt Co. after 35 39 and 40 years of service. Walker joined in 1931 and will retire December 31 1966. Serjack began in 1927 and retires December 31 1966. Fackler started in 1926 and retires January 31 1967.
Christmas open house for young single adults of all faiths at Milton United Presbyterian Church on Monday December 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. Invited are holiday home visitors servicemen college students local graduates and other young people connected to Rittman.
The Rittman board of education meets amid repeated delays in funding a new high school for 1873 pupils. Members reject May ballot plans and report opposition letters proposing additions to West Hill School. Budget talks include remodeling, two new rooms, and use of the high school auditorium as a study area.
Congressman John Ashbrook announces a December end-year and January courthouse tour across eight of the 17th District counties. The open sessions invite voters to discuss issues without appointments, dating from December 27 in Guernsey Cambridge to January 13 in Knox Mount Vernon.
The Rittman Savings Bank will be closed on Monday December 26 and Monday January 2. Allan Broadhurst vice president announced the days off allow employees to spend the holidays with their families.
Mrs Maggie Roberts 60 of Wooster died after an extended illness Saturday services were conducted by Rev Albert Henry. A former Ohio Boxboard Company employee and Rittman resident she is survived by six children including Lawrence Noble of Wooster, three sisters, a brother, and 22 grandchildren.
Delta Club members request volunteers to donate one hour weekly to hear children read. Contacts are Mrs Thomas Spear and Mrs Jamey Moore. Recent meeting at Mrs Robert Bodager home discussed flag etiquette, charity drive, and holiday programs.
Monday council held a special meeting at 3 30 pm to discuss advertising for the sale of street improvements on North Main East Sunset and Industrial Streets. Bids open January 16 at 2 pm with award at 3 30 pm the same day. City Manager McCauley Gos ey urged a dump sign and stricter garbage dumping enforcement as Mayor Hall urged Stringer laws.
The 1966 year end report notes progress in some areas and setbacks in others. City actions stalled urban renewal efforts and a high school bond failed. Governor Rhodes visited to support growth, while the Chamber eyed a downtown redesign and a new road project marked real progress.
Ray mond Butch Weahry 24 of Creston killed when his car collided with a pole on Route 3 a mile south of Seville. Passenger and driver Bernard Thomas 32 of Medina also died. Surviving are wife Agnes and his family. Burial was at Fredericksburg East Cemetery.
