Beth Fellows, 17, faces rheumatic fever and hepatitis yet expresses mature Christmas hopes for sincere loyal friends and grace from heaven. Rittman school notices, radio weather updates, service member cards, and local birthdays and anniversaries fill the page with holiday reminders.
Four Rittman High School students Linda Parman Margie Goodhart Toby Faber and Phil Schumacher spend five days in Chicago at the 17th annual Mid-West National Band Clinic accompanied by director Gene Sharick. They stay at the Sherman House and meet band students from the U S and Canada. Highlights include an opening concert, exhibits, performances by Texas Wisconsin Illinois groups and the U S Air Force Academy Band of Colorado, plus a saxophone clinic and a French Horn spectacular ban quet breakfast and farewell. The quartet were chosen by student vote with faculty approval for their service to the band.
Public hearing on a Vogt Ivers and Associates survey endorsed a six year plan costing 410 000 to guide orderly city growth. The plan outlines capital projects from a new fire station to street widenings and utility expansions with funding debates centering on tax levy or income tax. Some residents urge careful financing while officials cite federal aid potential and a need for voluntary annexation agreements.
A five member OSU survey team studied Rittman schools Friday, inspecting buildings grounds and the community. They conferred with teachers reviewed courses of study and gathered impressions, with results to be correlated to material from the Board of Education and further studies planned in January. A final report is expected in early spring.
Nominations for Rittman’s Citizen Of Year are open for a dinner award on Jan 30. Citizens may be nominated by writing a letter detailing community service to Chamber secretary Mrs Hazel Damron at 310 West Ohio Avenue before Jan 21. A $50 bond and a $10 prize fund the winning entry.
The Women’s Benefit Association and Unity contributed money to Boys Village for Christmas. Thirteen members met at Western Star for their annual party. Prizes at the event included soap-carved dogs decorated with washcloths.
Earl G Kelbly 71 of Marshallville, brother of Ross Kelbly of Rittman, died Sunday night. Survived by wife Edith, daughter Virginia Bittinger of Akron, two grandchildren, two brothers Blair of Marshallville and Ross of Rittman, two sisters Verda Musser of Wadsworth and Blanche Mohn of Uniontown. Burial in Marshallville Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev Paul Halman officiating.
Rittman youngsters will meet Santa Claus at the city fire station this Saturday evening from 6 30 to 7 30. Rittman Volunteer Fire Department sponsors the visit and will pass out boxes of Christmas goodies to children up to 12 years old who are with parents. Firemen will pack the boxes tonight and view a safety film at the meeting sponsored by the Ohio Highway Patrol.
Sharon H Steiner of Rittman Road, daughter of Mr and Mrs Alvin Steiner, ranks among the top five percent in Ohio Scholarships Tests. A senior at Rittman High School she will receive an honorable mention certificate. Twenty five boys and twenty five girls statewide receive State Certificates of Award. tests given to seniors in November measure achievement in basic subjects.
Rittman Public Library will close early on Christmas Eve Tuesday December 24 for the holiday. Librarian Mrs Kathleen Hilliard says the library opens again at 3 p.m Thursday December 26.
Santa Claus will visit the Rittman Volunteer Fire Department Saturday at 6 30 PM to distribute box treats to children up to 12 years old with adults present. Boxes will be packed at Thursday’s group meeting with Firemen’s Auxiliary help. The department also sponsors the Easter Egg Hunt at Rittman Central Park the Saturday before Easter. Also noted: Buster Fremen elected Carl Adams president Weldon Hardgrove vice president Don Baker secretary Lawrence Cline assistant secretary Ferns Burns treasurer B H Seater assistant treasurer.
A cluster of local churches in Rittman announce Holy Week and Christmas services. St Anns Catholic Church will feature Missa Brevis at midnight mass with soloist Rob ert Chenal performing works by Franck and others. Milton Presbyterian and Evangelical United Brethren plan Christmas Eve services with music by church choirs. Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran hosts an 8 pm candlelight service, and multiple churches schedule Christmas morning masses and cantatas. Children and youth groups prepare programs and caroling for shutins and the community, with First Brethren and First Church of Christ presenting specials at 7:30 and 7:45 pm respectively.
Delta Club members plan a Christmas basket for a local family meeting at Gillman’s cabin. Fourteen members and two guests gathered for the traditional home Christmas party with gift exchange and carols led by Mr. Robert Frase. Refreshments were served. Mrs. Gerard Gillman assisted. Moving for new officers will occur in February.
Paul J Ritzi age 55 of Wooster died after illness at his jewelry store in Wooster. He was born in Creston to Frank and Blanche Ritz, moved to Wooster in 1947 after a career in Cleveland and Lorain. He is survived by wife Alice, two daughters, a son, two brothers, and three grandchildren. Burial at Lerow Rey Har ry Eberts to officiate. Friends may call at McIntire Funeral Home today 7 to 9 PM.
