Fire damages a garage and a car with losses estimated at 1000 dollars for the structure and 175 dollars for the vehicle. The owner said the car will be sold for junk and the fire’s cause is unknown pending investigation.
Santa Claus will land in Rittman on December 22 greeting shoppers at downtown stores from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. He then meets children at 6:30 p.m. at the fire station to hand out boxes and toys for kids under 12. The evening party features music, box distribution, and about 600 children expected. organized by the Recreation Advisory Council with fire department support and Chamber of Commerce funding.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Centerville Baptist Church in West Virginia for William E. Walker 80 of Wayne who died in Huntington Hospital after a two week illness. He is survived by three daughters Mrs Lucille Ballengee and Mrs Jidge of Rittman one sister Mrs Helen Fuchs of Wayne Route 1 Ida Varney of Delbarton WV eleven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. His wife Virginia preceded him. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery.
The Rittman Press prints two Christmas cartoons weekly as the annual coloring contest enters its second week. Entries must be postmarked by Monday December 17 and mailed or delivered to the office. Prizes include deluxe brief cases, school pencil boxes, and large or regular crayon boxes for 18 winners.
The Friends of the Rittman Public Library asked the Rittman Board of Education for a site along Main Street south of Recreation Hall for a future library. The board owns the land and previously leased part for Junior Achievement. a parking lot is planned to serve high school crowds.
Welcome Wagon Newcomers Club announces a dance on February 2 at the Legion Hall to raise funds for the Recreation Hall. Club president Mrs Franklin Hale says proceeds go to the fund with Mrs Joseph Powers as chair and Mrs George Dundon Mrs Ted Hanson and Mrs John Trogdon assisting.
The annual PTA Christmas music program will be presented Monday December 17 in the school auditorium. The high school band and choral groups will perform along with the grade school chorus under the direction of Carolyn Swope and Vernon Reeder.
Robert Graham faced an operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated charge and received a $100 fine plus costs and three days in jail. Brady Ullman was fined $3 for running a red light.
Funeral rites were conducted for Floyd Lewis 22 at Gillman Funeral Home after noon Saturday. He died Thursday from injuries suffered in a traffic accident November 27 in Dunlap Hospital. Final services were held Sunday at Tom's Creek Baptist Church in Wayne West Virginia.
The board proposed a $106 000 equipment bond to accompany new school buildings, with a 1.7 mill levy for 20 years. The larger $912 000 prior bond funded construction and left no funds for equipment. Officials debated whether to place two levies on the May ballot, the school bond and city operating levy, with recreation funding pushed to November. Potential equipment items include science lab 15000 home economics 10000 physical education 15000 music 8000 industrial arts 10000 and admin costs.
Christmas vacation for all Rittman school children begins December 19 at 2 30 p m. School will resume on January 2.
Five hunters were fined 15 dollars and court costs for hunting on Morton Salt Co property without permission. Mayor John Baldwin suspended the fine but the violators paid the court costs. Those fined were Earl Cosgrove William Swartz Richard Steele David Wilson and George Gumborovic. Sixteen members of Girl Scout Troop 1 A met at Recreation Hall Monday making German stars.
Two weeks remain to enter the Citizen of the Year contest in Rittman as the Chamber of Commerce invites nominations. Robert Bodager, secretary, says the Jan. 1, 1957 deadline applies. The winner receives a certificate, a $50 savings bond, and the writer of the winning nomination gains $10.
The Rittman Indians opened their home season with a 75 48 win over Smithville and aim to even the season series at Waynedale. Karl Benchoff led with 28 points as ten Indians scored, while Smithville fouled out four players and missed many free throws.
The Recreation Board wins approval to keep Recreation Hall open part time on Monday Wednesday and Thursday from 6 30 to 9 with a revised budget including salaries supplies insurance maintenance utilities and miscellaneous costs. Homer Pyle will serve as part time director under an ordinance setting rental rates and spending limits.
