A collection of handwritten notes from children including Gary Taylor Ben Heaper Steven Debbye McCain and others. They request toys such as trains dolls cameras rifles toy guns TVs and bicycles plus household items and treats for Christmas. They ask for family members pets to be included and promise cookies milk and cake.
Community groups announce a Christmas party December 17 at 1 p.m. at Mrs. Menegay's home with a one dollar gift exchange and a white elephant prize. Otterbein Bible Class hosts a dinner party December 13 at 2 30 p.m. with gifts for children and a one dollar exchange. Meats, rolls and beverages provided. Several local residents have family and health news. Girl Scout Troop 7 met Tuesday to craft and plan.
Three Barberton youths were arrested in Rittman after returning to the crime scene of an Ace-Hi Service Station break in. Willam Richardson 17 Jack Dague 18 and Hulen Brown 19 were charged with breaking and entering. Batteries tires and cash were stolen. the register found wrecked on County Road 70.
Chief Heffelman and Patrolman Lewis staked out Richard son home then tracked the suspects to Barberton where ten car batteries were dumped at a 19th Street garage. Patrolman Strimlan stopped the car entering Rittman at East Ohio Avenue. the trio were jailed and questioned. Richardson and Dague confessed. Brown held. window broken with cement block. robbery lasted about five minutes.
The Rittman Recreation Advisory Council hosts a Christmas party December 19 at 6 30 PM at the fire station for Rittman children 12 and under. Santa will greet attendees and each child will receive a Christmas treat. Tickets will not be handed out in schools this year. The party is for Rittman children only and is sponsored by a council of representatives from 20 clubs including Lions Rotary Girl Scouts PTA and Little League. Advisory Council members and firemen meet December 18 at 7 PM in Diversion Hall to pack boxes. Mel Goffinet leads boxes while Mrs. Russell Bell and Mrs. William Maus handle supplies.
Due to demand by shop people and merchants the $1,000 Christmas Drawing is extended through Saturday. Tickets will be drawn Tuesday morning at 9. Forty five winning tickets will receive script money to spend in participating stores with other prizes ranging from $100 to $1. Redeemed tickets must be deposited at the Ohio Fuel Gas Company office by 5 p.m. next week. numbers will be printed in the next Rittman Press.
Clyde Shook of Doylestown is named in a Wayne County Common Pleas petition seeking 1999 dollars in damages. John Seton and Grange Mutual Casualty Co of Columbus filed the suit alleging Bowman's son Robert drove east on Eastern Road, struck a ditch and utility pole, hitting Shook’s bus headed north on Two Road 94.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Beaver welcome a boy born December 2 in Rittman. Mr. and Mrs. Blucher Collins report a girl born December 3 in Rittman. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Wertz announce a boy born December 7 in Rittman.
Santa is coming to town Friday in Rittman from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. He will visit the school in the morning and then greet children in front of the Rittman Savings Bank where 5,000 candy canes will be handed out. The event, lit by 15 strings of lights, is funded by local businessmen with the Chamber of Commerce backing the visit.
Ohio Edison Company and Ohio Central Telephone will meet with council to iron out issues delaying new poles along Pinewood Maplewood Hickin and North Streets. A joint pole usage agreement was signed. engineers will inspect poles and report removals. School bond plans and driver training debates also outline Rittman agenda with January actions pending.
A car carrying five youths was hit by rifle fire at a county road intersection east of Rittman on December 4. The Wilkins car from Seville RD 1 passed blocked by a parked vehicle when a rifle bullet shattered its rear window. sheriff reports no injuries.
Creston and Rittman councils act after residents petition 422 workers from Packaging Corporation of America and Morton Salt Company oppose train switching delays. Erie replies. B and O silent. Bratcher fined earlier for crossing signals.
Rob ert Leroy Cardwell 31 a former Rittman and Mansfield resident drowned in the Indian River Florida on November 25 Funeral services were held at Fort Gay Baptist Church and burial followed December 2 at Upson Cemetery near Fort Gay W Va Cardwell died in a fishing boat accident while guiding the party which included a brother in law and sister Donald Bartram camp owners One other member of the party also drowned and two men were saved He was born in Fort Gay W Va November His survivors include his mother Mrs John Thompson Cardwell of Fort Gay his sister Cathy and two sons Gary all of Mansfield his grandmother Mrs Lutie Caldwell of Caldwell Idaho and a step sister Mrs Rex Christian of Huntington W Va
