The school board decided to scale back the planned grade school to 12 rooms and a possible playroom after bids exceeded approved funding. Spahn Barnes architects in Cleveland hosted the meeting, with bids redrawn from 14 rooms to fit budget. George Winship, the Main St. school janitor, accepted the board’s bid and will continue duties.
Erie R R Camp car closed for winter and B and O camp crew reduced lead to light mayor's court. Two cases heard Wayne Hoover Rittman and C H Benedict Wadsworth each fined $10 and costs for speeding.
Four automobile drivers were fined for passing a standing school bus by Justice of Peace Bertha Sherrick. Each was fined 10 dollars plus 910 dollars in court costs. The drivers named are Fred Marty of Sterling, Peter Steinmetz of Creston, Paul Moore of Sterling, and Donald Woldy of 66 North Main Street.
At about 10 00 pm three people were seriously injured when a car overturned several times on Route 5 about one mile west of the Route 94 junction south of Rittman. Mrs Bryan and a female passenger were taken to Wooster hospital by Gillmans ambulance, while Les Bryan was driven to the hospital by Don Emch.
Robert Freed cites numerous achievements by citizens through the Chamber of Commerce. Projects include Route 94 resurfacing, Sterling Avenue widening, new grade school plans, parking lots, street lighting, and an active membership growth from 67 to 121. The report highlights bonus nights, shopping certificates, public housing efforts, and a citizens protest on phone service with ongoing aims for better, lasting improvements.
One thousand dollars more has been collected this week for the Scout Lodge to be erected at the Youth Center off E Ohio Ave. F O Kanehl, chairman, reported at a Thursday night meeting in city hall. Total raised exceeds $2000. If another $1000 is pledged, construction could start this month and close in February.
Rittman will entertain Doylestown Saturday night in the first of two high school basketball meetings. The Rittman varsity, trimmed to 10 players, features lettermen Neil Milford Vernon Hoskinson Ronnie Hardgrove and Harold Walker with Jim Duskey Lyle Marvin Gene Ditch Dan Rosenberg Al Brueck and Wayne Berger in the rotation.
City planning expert Charles E Hatch urged Rittman to grow wisely to save thousands in coming years. He described planning as more than zoning, outlining needs for schools sewers land for widening streets parks and public buildings to accommodate future growth and traffic. Hatch noted the town can guide expansion without waste and spoke to the Chamber of Commerce audience of over 125.
Olympic 100 meter champion Harrison Dillard and coach Edward Finnegan will speak at the Rittman Booster Club dinner honoring the football squad and cheerleaders. The 6 30 pm event at the Church of Christ on Main Street is organized by booster president Lawrence Wilmot and superintendent W H Hauenstein.
Six men shared vacation stories at a Thursday noon Rotary meeting. Speakers included J W Frye, Howard Dailey, George Sandrock, Sylvan Wiles, Homier Moore, and Herbert Yabrott.
