Mrs. Robert Arnold reports seeing a flying object with family members in the Rittman area around midnight Sunday. The note questions belief in Arnolds and Governor Gilligan while highlighting a local U F O sighting.
Clifford R Miller 78 of 919 Wall Rd died Wednesday at Barberton Citizens Hospital He was born March 20 1895 in Reader West Virginia and lived in the Rittman Sterling area before moving to Wadsworth 18 years ago He served in World War I and worked at Akron Brass Co Wooster then Packaging Corp of America for 12 years until retiring in 1960 He was a member of First Baptist Church Rittman Surviving are two daughters a sister four grandchildren and two great grandchildren Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 am from the First Baptist Church Rittman with burial in Rittman Cemetery Rev William F Harris officiating
December events include Junior Mother's Club at 6 30 p.m. at Wayne Savings and Loan meeting room. Local 150 gathers at 12 noon and 7 30 p.m. Rotary meets at United Methodist Church at 12 noon. Rittman plays Dalton in WCL league on December 7. American Legion Auxiliary meets December 10 at 8 p.m. Fire Department Auxiliary December 11 at 7 30 p.m. The Delta Club meets at 8 p.m.
Brad Troxel announces the 1973 United Fund Campaign surpassed its goal at 21 715 55, a 10 percent rise over 1972 pledges. Major donors include Packaging Corporation of America 7239 80 Morton Salt 2568 Small Industry 912 and Commercial 5227 97. A Monday luncheon at Williams Restaurant honored workers and committee members.
Nominations for Rittman’s Citizen of the Year 1973 are requested by January 9. Send letters outlining civic service to the Rittman Chamber of Commerce at 91 N Fifth Street. The winner will be announced January 15 at the Chamber’s annual banquet. Judges include past recipients Mrs. Robert Bodager Vern Phillips and Robert West.
Congressman Ralph Regula spoke by telephone to senior government students at Rittman High School detailing his duties in the 16th District and his work on the Interior subcommittee and Indian Affairs He discussed daylight saving time the defense budget U S exports and the Middle East situation he faulted the Russian wheat deal and said history will judge President Nixon while urging reduced executive privilege He defended oil exports during the energy crisis and noted the large number of elected officials versus a small jail count urging scrutiny of officials actions Continued on Page 2.
Residents adapted to a largely gasless Sunday amid shortages after President Nixon urged conservation. Many supported lower speeds to 50 mph and thermostat setbacks, while some stations like Pete’s Texaco stayed open late. Fire officials warned about improper handling of extra gas cans as locals plan for future weekends.
Millard Hainey Ellis 61 of Smithville West and formerly of Rittman died Tuesday morning at Wooster Community Hospital He was born December 17 1911 in Barnard Missouri and lived in Rittman 11 years before moving to Smithville seven months ago He worked at Sinclair Valentine Co in Rittman for 16 years He was a member of Rittman Moose Lodge 860 and a charter member of the Turkeyfoot Sportsman Club of Portage Lakes Surviving are his wife Beatrice a son John of Hickory NC a daughter Elizabeth Power of Hastings MI a brother Russell Ellis of Eugene OR four grandchildren two half brothers and one half sister Burial will be in Rittman Cemetery with services Thursday at 1 30 pm Gillman Funeral Home Rittman prior calling hours 7 9 pm Wednesday
