City Manager Macauley Gosney announced the dump at East Ohio and Sunset will be abandoned next spring after negotiations with three area property owners for a new out-of-view site. The move aims to end a decade of controversy and nuisance from illegal dumping and smoke while preserving the approach to Rittman via Route 57 Ohio Avenue. The project plans include six days a week operation for township taxpayers and possibly final beautification with shrubs from the Chamber of Commerce funding.
A personal letter recounts attending a Rotary Club meeting on July 26 with spouses, presenting banners between Apostoles Club and Rittman Rotary, and sharing emails from Argentina. Mrs Mary E Collins age 87 died Sunday in Kettering Hospital Ohio. She was a former Wooster resident and mother of Mrs Wilford Blatter and John Collins of Rittman and Mrs Ross Kelbly of Marshallville. Surviving daughters include Mrs Oia Cummings and Mrs Harriet Lynn of Dayton and son Joseph Collins of Lake Alfred Florida.
The Oddfellows and Rebekahs of Doylestown host an annual Grear and Peach Festival on Saturday in the square from 5 30 to 6 66 pm. A menu features sandwiches baked beans potato chips ice cream peaches pie cake punch and coffee. The public is invited.
Area Sleepwalkers won prizes in a Friday sale with drawings across stores. Winners include Margaret Daugherty who claimed a pop corn popper at Sofield Pharmacy and Nancy Stoll who won a $25 merchandise certificate from Rufener Floors and Hartzler Linoleum.
Recent fines and forfeitures in traffic court include Roger Lanning of Akron for expired license with a $20 fine and costs, Michael Copley of Rittman for crossing double yellow lines for $10 forfeiture, Paul Robinson of Rittman for intoxication $30 forfeiture, Harlan Perry of Rittman for unnecessary noise $10 forfeiture, Robert Medley of Rittman for DWI $100 and costs plus three days jail, and others including Jones of Wadsworth intoxication, Mike Skraba, Brigitte Marcum, and Jerry Brickey with various offenses and penalties.
Rittman High School seniors Joyce Beery and Connie McComas are among 225 high school journalists at Kent State University for the eighth annual High School Press Institute this week. They will join lectures and labs in news and feature writing, copy editing, photojournalism, layout and production for newspapers and yearbooks. Other area students include Alice Beth Busson of Doylestown and Emmajane Finney of Marshallville.
The American Legion Auxiliary invites members to a steak roast on Monday August 28 at 6 30 pm. A 75 cent donation will be asked for the dinner Call to reserve with Mrs Dale Rohrer at 925 4771 by Friday.
The Last Trip makes its final summer run to Burbank from 3:30 to 5:00 PM and Sterling from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. All books and fines should be settled at this time.
PCA completes a 690 foot exterior storm sewer addition on Salt Street in Rutman City. The work frees space by removing a parking area and reshaping a near 1,000 square foot site to accommodate about 200 cars with improved drainage and access, funded from PCA’s own resources. Public officials praise the project as benefiting the wider community.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol will graduate 26 officers from the 77th academy class on August 18 in Columbus. They will be assigned to various patrol posts statewide after a one week of intensive training and two months of field instruction with veteran patrolmen.
Voters can register at the Wayne County Board of Elections office in Seceden during regular hours. The deadline for fall registration is September 27 at 9 p.m.
Marine Gunnery Sergeant Robert E Massie son of Mr and Mrs Charles Massie earned his first medal while serving with the First Marine Aircraft Wing in Vietnam. Massie, entering his 15th year of service, served on a helicopter earning the award for meritorious flight in support of U S and allied ground forces. He graduated in 1953 from Sterling High School and enlisted in September 1933.
Booster club hosts an Elephant Sale Saturday August 26 at 1 pm on a vacant site beside First Baptist Church West Ohio. In case of rain the event moves to the basement of the William Davis Building. Booster club membership tickets are available this week for 1 dollar.
