A Rittman man seeks a match in a crowded Wadsworth drug store. The blue suited soda clerk boasts of Ohio Match Company fame while extolling Wadsworth as a match town. The smoker exits with a Diamond Match Co pack from New York City.
At the Diane Theatre a crowd applauded the Rittman Silver Dollar Night drawing with Tony Puccio claiming 20 silver dollars after the nine o clock announcement. A brief vaudeville moment followed as others won nothing. Rotarians spotted a wanted poster resembling President Cap Rhonemus and a mention of a $5,000 Howard. A Maine vacationer credits Py Williams. A group of boys raced toward a creek with the leader declaring the last one in is a Democrat.
A Rittman merchant overblued towels in a wash attempt prompting anxious laughter. The column lists quirky notes like Arm of the Law with Kelly Bell startling drivers in front of Robinett’s with a loud police whistle. Indian Deal has Foggy Breece backing out after a drawn up agreement on a sales tax receipt. Harry Ditch and Bill Balloon showy football drills on a primary school lot as Wooster’s intercollegiate season approaches. Lu ey McConnell hunts for car keys while a heater mixup fuels a chilly night scare and a frantic search ends with keys found elsewhere.
Post Office in Rittman to begin alien registration and fingerprinting on August 27 for all aliens over 14 in the area. Applications available at the post office. those under 14 will be fingerprinted as they reach 14. Interpreters advised for non English speakers. changes of address must be reported within five days. About 200 aliens expected in the Rittman vicinity.
U S Census Bureau figures show Milton Township with 4,789 residents in 1940, up 96 from 1930. Baughman Township leads Wayne County gains with 3,943 residents, up 903 from 3,040. Green Township records a 625 decline to 4,631 from 5,256. Preliminary figures for other Wayne County townships follow.
Rittman recreation facilities will expand with two new tennis courts north of the high school. Nets have arrived and wire netting stretched. A double gate was built, and painting plus sinking removable net posts are planned to enable PE classes during the year.
Fifty year old Grover Beichler of Rittman Ohio collapsed while hauling oats at a farm between Sterling and Rittman. He was found by a vehicle team at the roadside bleeding after returning to the Wurgler barn. believed to have died of a heart attack around 10 45 Thursday morning.
A son was born on Friday August 16 at Wadsworth Hospital to Mr and Mrs Steiner.
V. M. Irvin has set up Irvin Motor Sales on East Ohio Avenue in the vacant lot between the Reality Block and the Silver Lake Diner. Signs were put up and lights were installed Saturday to mark the opening of the used car lot.
Rittman residents claimed thirty five silver dollars Saturday during the third Rittman Silver Dollar Night. Jack Baker won 15 dollars at 8 PM with John Peronis assisting. Tony Puccio received 20 dollars at 9 PM with Johnny Adams helping. Prizes were presented at Brenneman’s Grocery by Marshal Heffelman and Deputy R. V. Fredrick, with public announcements by G. Ernest Harrison. Seven more awards remain among 45 merchants in the ten week campaign.
Friday evening Miss Betty Amstutz and Roger McGee returned from Otterbein College Summer Training School sent by the Rittman church. The school enrollment this year was 163 with students expected to be above sophomore year in high school. The United Brethren Church operates four other Ohio schools for younger students.
The Rittman firemen defeated Orrville firemen in a water battle during the Wayne County Firemen Association meeting at West Salem. Rittman team members were J M Huile Norman Beery and Wade Roher. The group announced a benefit on August 30 and 31 with concessions on the Square and a two day display of a new rural fire rack on a Chevrolet pumper.
Walter E. Blackwell of Rittman was found guilty of possessing for sale untaxed wine in Wooster Common Pleas Court. A seven to five jury convicted after a two day trial. six months in jail and $200 fine were imposed, with $100 of the fine suspended on one year probation. Prosecutor Raymond O. Morgan led the state case. Attorney Robert Critchfield defended. Charges stemmed from sale of six quarts of wine for 50 cents to state liquor inspectors. jury deliberated long before verdict.
The Rittman Village Council declined a petition by beer, wine and liquor permit holders to extend closing time to midnight. The decision followed input from the Rittman Church Council and objections by council members. The meeting also addressed Ordinance No 1840 on curbside loading for commercial vehicles and park lighting plans for Central Park, with next steps set for the third reading and a sidewalks repair report due at the next session.
The revised schedule features the Curtis All-Stars Akron August 22 followed by Medina Gas Co and Cleveland Niagara Furnace August 23, Massillon Griscom Russell August 26, Smithville and Barberton August 27, and Orrville Moose August 28. Night games start at 8:30 with lights on at the recreation field.
At the Monday board meeting superintendent W A Qarven said Frederick Ebbs the music teacher at Fittman Schools asked to be released from his contract. The board unanimously voted to accept the resignation. The session covered bills for the high school tennis course and a shift of the Stem Insurance Agency management to Wadeworth Insurance. Calendar items set school openings and holidays for 1940 41. The board postponed next meeting to September 9 and planned a special session Friday to discuss candidates for Ebbs replacement.
The Rittman Press will publish a Harvest Edition on Thursday August 29 featuring rural news and harvest activity reports for Rittman and nearby areas. Local merchants will run back to school ads in the following Thursday issue.
J O Davis of Wooster opens a branch of his Merchant Tailors at 11 Salt St Rittman in the former Ass Patore building. The shop features new machinery with K B Davis operating the Rittman unit focusing on cleaning pressing and dyeing Mrs Davis helps in Salt St store.
The Post Office philatelic truck on a national tour will stop in Wooster on Saturday September 27 for four hours in the public square. The 23-foot truck will carry a complete assortment of postage stamps and related items.
The Tree Valley Fishing Club hosted its ninth annual picnic at Aldimen Central Park with about sixty members in attendance. Local organizers noted camaraderie and ongoing fishing club activities amid a festive outdoor gathering.
