Duane Schmid to Serve as Auditor Deputy in Wooster
Duane Schmid of Shreve will begin work as a deputy in the county auditor's office under Earl Lautenschlager in Wooster on August 16. A discharged Navy veteran, Schmid served as boatswain's mate first class with tours including the China Seas, the Algie, and LST 607 during World War II, earning the ETO and Asiatic Pacific ribbons with two battle stars, the American campaign ribbon, amphibious insignia, and the good conduct medal. He replaces Miss Ardys Burger of Wooster.

President Truman signs act increasing pensions and full payments for roughly 2 million World War I and II veterans plus 400,000 dependents. Legion Vets Weekend Record Two Wins Two Losses
Rittman American Legion Vets split two victories and two defeats over the weekend. Warwick beat Rittman 3 1 in a twilight game last Wednesday August 7. Pinkie Yarman allowed five hits and eight strikeouts. Johnson of Warwick held Rittman to four hits with seven strikeouts. Bill Brumfield had two singles to lead the hitters. Wadsworth overwhelmed Craig with 16 hits and beat Rittman 14 4. Rittman Vets travel to West Salem for two games on August 18 at 1 30.

In the opener Rittman Legion defeated Bowerston 11 to 4. Johnny Steiner allowed four hits, Bill Brumfield had three singles and a double, Turner collected three hits in four at bats, and Matz had two. Rittman totaled 16 hits. In the nightcap the Vets beat Boxboard 12 to 11 after trailing 11 1 in the third, with Turner and Matz pacing the offense and Matz going 5 for 5.

Harry Fry's orchestra provided fine music for the Legion V J Day dance in the high school auditorium. Publicity included local newspapers a mobile PA system and posters. The Legion plans another dance this fall and hopes for wider public support with time and place to be announced.

Legion Goes Western for Rodeo August 25
Eighteen events are planned for the All Western Rodeo sponsored by Post No. 423 of the American Legion. It will take place one mile south of Rittman on Route 94 with events such as a ladies water race pony reserve race musical chair trick horses roping western jump ladies ride and run and a pony race. The C S Saddle Club handles the special events and the Doylestown Legion Band provides music.

Foundations laid for 24 temporary government housing units
Construction progresses on 24 units from 18 Army barracks. Al Hoth of W. B. Gibson Co. expects two units arriving next week as crews of over 30 laborers lay three foundations. Barracks are cut and sections dismantled to assemble the homes within 75 days as sewer gas and watt lines are already in place.
