A July carnival fire prompts swift evacuation and an all clear in 2 minutes. Local birthdays for August are listed, with names such as Kathy Fetzer and Delores Croft. Community notices include visits, camp attendance, hospital stays, and a birth at Wooster Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Sunday for Ernest W. Bauman 33 of Rittman Ohio killed Thursday morning in a crossing accident near Sterling. Bauman raised five children and owned Bauman Egg Farm for 10 years. Surviving are his wife five children and his parents five brothers and a sister. Burial was at Apostolic Christian Church cemetery.
Patrolman Beecher Noble resigns after 12 years with the Rittman department. City Manager Charles Mann states a replacement has not yet been selected as three Civil Service examinees are being screened for the vacancy.
Principal John R Hester urges new students at Rittman High School to register for fall courses Aug 12 19. The high school office is open 8 4 daily except noon hour with guidance director William Cecil available for conferences and scheduling help. Exceptional changes only for those with summer school credit.
Union submits ten day strike notice to Pack aging Corporation of America. Negotiations over economic issues continue as a meeting is set for Tuesday morning. The contract expired August 1 and a ten day notice is required by the pact. If not signed by August 21 the union may strike. Also ongoing talks involve IBEW members and Ohio Edison with five men on strike for four weeks.
The Sterling stop runs Thursday Aug 13 from 6 30 to 8 30 p m in Sterling and Burbank hosts a 4 30 to 5 30 p m visit the same day according to Wayne County librarian Katherine Schantz.
City clerk Maxine Leatherman resigns effective September 15 to relocate outside city limits. Council approves bidding to photograph 15,000 feet of sewer mains at $9,000 to address storm water flooding. A 1949 survey on Rittman contamination is deemed outdated, new locating methods to be used. Portable pumps sought from Wooster and Orrville. subdivision rules to be reviewed. five member shade tree commission planned. efforts to quick claim 10 vacant lots awaiting delinquent taxes.
Rittman school leaders plan to discuss bus conveyance for Rittman pupils to Ida Sue School for the Handicapped in Wooster funded by the local board. They propose prior approval for all bus trips and a ban on nonroutine trips without consent. The board may also back an area junior high band contest and civil defense adult education programs under state guidance.
Police notes report recent cases heard before Mayor Ashton Hall and Raymond Busch in Akron. One driver received three days in jail and a $105 fine for driving while impaired. Others faced fines for failing to yield right of way in Rittman and Ramadan Resel faced a $15 penalty.
Attendance set records at the Carni-Fair led by fair chairman Howard Wasson opening night. Winners included Robert Bodager and Mrs Rose Tomassetti for prizes, a color TV grand prize to Mrs Rose Tomassetti, and multiple antique cars and firefighting equipment prizes from Rittman Wadsworth Chippewa Lake Barberton Avery Kinch Joe Haldiman and others.
The second annual Sleepwalker Sale in Rittman runs from 8 30 p m to midnight on August 28. Merchants promise hundreds of dollars in merchandise giveaways and other prizes as shoppers fill the streets. Dave Wright, chair, says more details will follow for this community event.
Four residents filed last minute for three available Rittman city council seats. Veterans John Lenhart John Simonton and Warren Hardgrove will leave the council December 1. Only Clarence Kunkler has prior council experience among the four candidates. Mrs Tyska is the first woman candidate. Bodager is tied to Bodager Real Estate and Insurance. Tuska works as a receptionist for Dr William Walker. Gish and Kunkler are Packaging Corporation of America employees.
