Air and Mrs. Herbert Smith received word this week that their son Pvt. Howard L. Smith stationed at Camp Swift Texas has been promoted to Private First Class His address is 15 PFC Howard L. Smith 35604041 Br C 365th PA Bn AP Q 445 Camp Swift Texas.
Ohio July Series E War Bond sales reached 43.641 million, up about 3 million from June. County results show Cuyahoga leading at 11.389 million with Franklin, Hamilton, Lucas, Mahoning, Montgomery, Stark, and Summit posting strong totals. Fiscal year 1942-43 Series E sales totaled 56.146 million versus 190.262 million the prior year.
During the pastor's vacation the Session Committee arranged two guest preachers for August 22 and August 29. The Rev S Hendrickson of Lorain First Presbyterian will preach at the morning service. On August 22 Rev Revolver S Starn of Valiparaiso First Presbyterian will speak at the morning service. Members and friends are invited to attend both worship services.
The 19th annual basket picnic sponsored by Joe Spievak of Youngstown Ohio for artificial limb wearers and their families will be held Sunday August 15 at Dun Eden Lake on Ohio Route 45 between Salem and Ellsworth. Events include foot races waving contests bicycle races horseshoe and tennis games a special leg wearer baseball game swimming and boating. Limb wearers from near and far will attend invitations extend to all limb wearers and their families. Surgeons are welcome to observe former patients and the safety of employment is noted.
Ohio State University gardening specialist J. H. Boyd warns that incorrect harvesting wastes garden produce. Tomatoes should be picked ripe for canning, three quarters ripe for salads, and kept dry. underripe or vine ripe affects quality. Dig potatoes after vines die, dry if safe from sun. store onions and potatoes in a cool, dry place to prevent spoilage and pests.
Doylestown Mrs Doris Smith announces the third annual flower show of the Doylestown Garden Club for members and guests at the president Grace McKinney home on August 25. Entries must arrive by a stated date. Mrs Doris Gatehouse leads the hostess committee with Miss Relen Bush assisting. Judges are Mrs A C Peiffer and Mrs Dan Mishler of Smithville. Prizes awarded by point value. Show displays arranged by room including living room, dining room, kitchen, and four bedrooms with specific item requirements.
Ivic Improvement Committee of Doylestown Garen Club announces an up to date honor roll of 235 servicemen from Chippewa Township. The board lists names alphabetically for easy verification, including Richard Ault, Albert Arnold, Kenneth Adams, Joseph Andraka, and many others along with navy nurse Carl Centa and army nurse Lucille Born.
Anthony and Agnes Krantz transfer 173 acres in Coippewa Township to Edwin W Krieble and Faith P Krieble for one dollar. The record notes a deed exchange and ownership change pending standard county filing procedures.
County Treasurer Ben Mellvaine reports a drop in real estate tax payments but notes no penalties for late payments. Mail payments rise as the month continues, with daily receipts expected to grow. In Rittman, taxes may be paid at The Rittman Savings Bank for those unable to travel to Wooster. A divorce decree is granted to David Rohr of Rittman from Elva Rohr of Massillon Hospital in Wooster common pleas court proceedings.
Floyd Hochstetler and Dorothy Hochstetler sue Bert Gordon and Alice Gordon in Wooster Common Pleas to establish their rights to use a Rittman alley for garage access and coal deliveries and seek damages of 200 dollars for obstructed use. Attorney C E Rhone represents the plaintiffs.
Ramadan Resol of Rittman filed a second divorce action in Wooster Common Pleas Court against Lucille Resol alleging extreme cruelty. He claims she lied about prior marriages and children and that after their 1942 marriage she admitted two prior marriages and three children, resumed associations with other men after a June filing was dropped.
William Thomas Chapman of Rittman was arrested as an absent without leave serviceman from the US Army at Indiantown Gap, Pa. He was returned to the camp over the weekend by officers from there after being held in the county jail following arrest by Rittman Chief of Police Charles Heffelman.
A notice asks anyone knowing a missing name in Chippewa Township to call Mrs. Hilda Addis after listing numerous residents with varied spellings. The fragment ends with an appeal to provide any omitted names to complete the local roster.
Wayne County Draft Board 2 reports 23 men in 1-A last week. Richard Goudy was rejected for flat feet after volunteering earlier. After the August call for 29 men to leave on the 19th, board members doubt full completion, leaving 23 in reservoir plus new 1-A entrants. Likely to delay toward the September 62 man call.
Ohio tax collectors report higher year to date sales tax receipts through July 24 at 30 248 011 versus 29 692 689 last year though the week ending the 24th dipped about 1.0 percent. Restaurants showed a notable week gain while Wayne County posted 146 659 year to date and 3 967 for the week versus 153 413 and 7 818 in 1942. Vinton County remains last with weekly 15 312 and annual 5 565.
At a special City Hall session last Saturday the council reversed its bid advertisement for sewage system overhaul and authorized a survey by an engineering firm to locate the drainage problem starting at the disposal plant. Sanitary Engineer C C Homan urged tracing to the source while Henry Lear had begun a blanket repair bid which was cancelled. Canton engineers will commence the survey Monday as Clerk James H Hockenberry announced, and the street oiling project reached about 2300 dollars for bituminous material and gravel.
Lt. C. O. Williamson announces a new slogan and policy allowing seventeen year olds with parental consent to enlist in the Air Corps Enlisted Reserve. They wear silver wings with AC on blue backing and pursue aviation cadet training at colleges and bases such as Randolph Field. Eligible applicants include those eighteen to twenty six who volunteer or apply via the aviation cadet examining board.
A sedan stolen from Wooster by a 16 year old youth was found overturned and abandoned in a ditch at the Erie Tail road crossing of Rittman Sterling road. The owner is M. W. Bechtel of Wooster. Sheriff’s deputies recovered the car Saturday noon and held it at a Rittman garage pending fingerprints and evidence for charges.
A Dallas trucker cost himself trouble after helping a woman change a tire on Route 94 near Rittman. As he started the truck, the trailer lurched, the rig toppled into a ditch, and the patrol crew took him into custody despite his good deed.
Former Congressman William R. Thom spoke at a Rotary luncheon, contrasting Nazi German figures with German born immigrants in the area. He recounted Otto Strasser, who opposed Hitler and Nazi party policies, and noted Strasser’s exile to Canada after related events. A. H Thomas will lead Rotary programs in the next two weeks.
More than 350 persons attended the second annual Farm Bureau Field Day at the Experiment Station in Wooster last Friday. Murray D. Lincoln, secretary of the Ohio Farm Bureau and a delegate to the United Nations Food Conference in Hot Springs, Va., spoke in the afternoon. A program by the Farm Bureau Advisory councils followed, along with a dog training demonstration for police and war work by Carl Bradford. John Leininger chaired the program committee and A. M. Burdge led the dinner committee.
Superintendent V A Garver announced that Kathryn Kinney Allerding of Mansfield will teach third grade for the coming year in Orrville. A former Orrville student, she previously taught locally as Kathryn Kinney, now married to former Rittman High coach Allerding. She will reside in Orrville to care for her parents. Coseth Allerding is a guard and athletic assistant at Mansfield Reformatory.
Orrville reporter Art Runiea of the Wooster Daily Record intervened when three boys aged 7, 8, and 10 ml wandered from Rittman toward Wooster on Route 94. He stopped them, contacted Police Chief Charles Heffelman, and had the youths returned home after learning they were unauthorized.
Washington reports that by full labor force use and 2040 hours per worker the postwar output could reach 56.8 to 88 million dollars for Wayne County in current prices. Estimates compare 1940 and 1942 price bases, with volume 50 percent higher than 1940, as National Economics Unit notes.
Pvt. Clifford P. Snell left Sunday to return to Station Hospital in Phoenixville Pennsylvania after a 21 day furlough at his Front Street home. Snell was wounded in North Africa in April and returned to the States in June after serving a 21 day furlough.
