Ford makes roller bearings from steel ribbon at Highland Park Plant
Ford Motor Company at Highland Park operates a department using 125 miles of steel ribbon daily to produce 51,600 roller bearings. Ribbon, 0.053 in thick and about 0.5 in wide, is formed into winders and cut into straight lengths then hardened and tempered. Centerless grinders ensure precise rollers before final assembly and welding, with remagnetizing the bearings to remove magnetism and prevent steel splin from adherence.
