Local Telephone Service Becomes Major Issue In Rittman

The Rittman Chamber of Commerce board met at Williams Restaurant and adopted a resolution to form a citizens telephone committee led by president Robert Freed. Directors urged residents to report poor service and contact the board with views while supporting a formal hearing request to the State Public Utilities Commission via village council. A follow up meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday.

Missionary Guild Covered Dish Supper Report

The Girl's Missionary Guild of the First Evangelical United Brethren church held a covered dish supper in the park pavilion on Monday August 2 at 6 30 pm. Miss Donna Berger and her committee led games and Miss Marjorie Schumacher with Miss Phyllis Seebauer led the program. President Miss Maxine Straub conducted the business meeting and the next gathering is set for September 13 at Miss Elaine Bodager's home with Mr Russell Steiner and Miss Donna Berger as leaders.

Surprised Shower for Mrs Donald Kimes Held at Gaborsky Home

Mrs Donald Kimes was surprised with a pink and blue shower at the home of her mother Mrs Joe Gaborsky. On Tuesday evening August 3 fifteen guests attended the social hour and watched the honored guest open gifts. Refreshments were served by Mrs Gaborsky Mrs Carroll Wright and Miss Millicent Wright.

Reverend Echols resigns from First Baptist Church

Rev W F Echols submits a letter of resignation to the church executive board. He will serve until Sept 1 to aid the transition and will be followed by a new minister. Since arriving almost 12 years ago the congregation grew from 37 to over 400 and the new building, costing 71000, hosts services. Echols previously worked as a radio minister at WJW and hosted programs on WJAR Akron and WWST Worcester.

Price of Milk Increases Two Cents A Quart

The Pleasant View Dairy announced a two cent per quart milk price increase in Rittman effective August 1 matching Akron market prices. Clayton Kunkler, PV Dairy manager, cited market parity as the reason for the raise. Weekend guests of Mrs Edith Amstutz included Mr and Mrs K J Weir, Saybrook. Mr and Mrs Charles Frank, North Industria. and Mr and Mrs Frank Derthick, Lakeland, Florida.

Rittman Schools Set September Opening Dates

Rittman schools will open September 7 with a teachers meeting in the morning and grades reporting in the afternoon for the new term. Classes resume September 8 as the district renews its three mill operating levy. The board granted janitor and bus contracts, discussed Guilford Township transfer hearing, reported full teaching staff, summer painting of 17 rooms, planning for growth, and bleacher repairs ahead of the season.

The Population Guessing Contest will close Saturday. Submit entries by mail or postcard to the Committee of Judges at the Rittman Press, postmarked no later than Saturday, August 7. Details appear on page 3.

Boy Recovering After Head Blow In Town Incident

Tom Freed son of Mr and Mrs Don Freed was struck on the head by an unidentified man while looking for a bicycle fork near the Keating waste paper plant. He awoke later and recovered some, with about 360 dollars missing from his pockets. Workers Woodroe O'Neil and Alfred Webber were detained briefly on suspicion before being released and told to leave town.

Scout Organization Seeks Sales Tax Stamp Drive
