Local Court Fines Pete Ward Six Months Jail Drive

A fine of 200 dollars and costs plus six months in the county jail was imposed on Pete Ward of Rittman by Mayor John Baldwin at a City Hall trial. Mother of CPL Hall Informed of Death in France

Mrs. Shelby Hall of Saltst received a War Department telegram announcing the death of her son, Cpl Gus Hall, in France on July 4. He served with the Army Air Corps overseas nearly a year and a half. Surviving are his mother, father, sister Gladys, brother Seaman first class Russell Halli in the Pacific, and grandmother Mrs. Josephine Hall of Wayne, West Virginia. BOOST ROBERT FREED TO SECOND LIEUTENANT BY DIRECT AWARD

Robert Freed former assistant postmaster in Rittman has been commissioned as second lieutenant by direct award. A sergeant in the Army postal service in Paris his merit prompted the promotion without officers training school. Freed was drafted in May 1948 and went overseas before D-Day, making him possibly the first man from the area to receive such an honor in this war.
