The Civic Association and trade committee launch a weekly Rittman Merchants auction inviting the public to bid on articles placed in shops. Bids remain secret until Saturday night when the highest bid wins the article at the buyer's price.
James Seccombe, U.S. representative, reiterates a hands off foreign policy stance. He cites neutrality, strong national defense, and opposition to sending American sons abroad, while stressing unemp loyment and domestic concerns as priorities. The letter, issued to James Seccombe by Ernest Harrison of the Rittman Press, outlines his views amid European tensions.
A P General Store will close its doors Saturday April 22 in E Ohio after a year of operation. The market will move to new quarters in Wadeworth with Thompson as store manager and an assistant produce manager at the Wadeworth location.
The Ohio Boxboard Troop No. 110 formed Oct. 31, 1937 with 15 boys now has 31. The troop, with three patrols, earned a high Akron Area Council rating. Roster lists leaders and many scouts including patrol leaders Boyce, Heffelman, Mower, and others along with two junior assistant Scoutmasters and an assistant Scoutmaster.
James Miller of Ohio Box 410 Scout Troop will be presented the Bronze Palm at the Akron Area Council Court of Awards. He earned Eagle Scout last February and is the first in his district to reach Bronze Palm, serving as junior assistant Scoutmaster with John Miller. He has five years in scouting and held junior and senior officer roles at Camp Manatee. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Boyd Mier of Ohio Ave.
Acme Stores celebrate their 48th anniversary this week marking growth from humble beginnings to 50 stores and a capitalization of 1.5 million dollars. The Frebrecht Grocery Co. now employs 603 people with an annual payroll of 600,009 dollars as the chain features special food terms during the observance.
Eight members of the Rittman fire department attended the Wayne County Volunteer Firemen's Association meeting in Orrville Monday night. Weldon Hardgrove presided. James Galehouse praised the firefighters. future meeting sites include West Salem, Shreve, Dalton, Smithville, Creston, and Doylestown with Dalton joining the group.
Local exhibit features products and packages made in nearby factories. Pictured are items made and sold by the Acme store and local merchants. JT E Swope, Howard Qualman, and RC Cau Co assisted in assembling the display. The Ohio Boxboard and Ohio Salt provided materials. The display remains in the Acme store window.
The College of Wooster Glee Club under Miss Eve Hicinen performed a varied secular program at Milton Presbyterian Church in Rittman. Soloists included Wanda Jane Nigh Pauline Smith Elizabeth Larson Lucia Platorsi and Bette Yoder with violin and harp accompaniment. The highlight was the Ave Maria from Thais sung by Larson Foster Welmer and Witzler with instrumental support. Superintendent Garver arranged the event funded by a free will offering and refreshments followed in the church parlors served by Mrs. Hauenstein and Mrs. Harrison.
Rittman Merchants opened their season with a Tuesday night gathering at George Brown’s home in W First St. Most of last year’s players attended along with two new pitchers Carroll Norris and DaHas Weiling of Bal. The group plans a Sunday practice weather permitting and a brief meeting afterward. Last year’s roster invites anyone wishing to try out.
Mrs Welling aged 44 died suddenly Monday at her Grant street home after a four week illness. Funeral services were held today at 2 p m at the Rittman church with Rev C J McGet officiating. Burial followed in Rittman cemetery with A L Ebert in charge. She was the wife of Russell Welling and had lived in Rittman for 18 years. the husband was the sole survivor.
Hershey and Roller, longtime grain and building supply dealers, purchased the first truckload of soy bean meal produced by the Soya Processing Co in Wooster. The plant is in full production turning out two carloads a day of meal and crude soy bean oil, with the first railcar going to New Castle Pennsylvania. Farmers in the county will gain a cash crop outlet as soil prep guidance and growing instructions are issued in bulletins and in the Farm Hand edition of the Rittman Press.
Rev. E S Hendrickson will occupy the pulpit at Milton Presbyterian Church Sunday after an eight week illness. He underwent gallstone surgery at Wadsworth hospital on March 7. Northr county readers see Rittman Press Want ads.
Street Commissioner Wayne Murtz and crew begin Monday to collect all rubbish for the annual Clean Up Week east of Main Street in the first three days. By week’s end the crew will tackle streets west of Main. Residents on streets torn up by paving should place rubbish in rear alley containers at a feasible street or alley spot.
Welton Hardgrove and Frank Webner shared first prize at Grella's Rittman Department Store Saturday night by guessing 812 against the actual 809. Other close winners included Mrs L Contillings and Mrs Diawond Eggeman who guessed 800, with Mrs Jesse Vallandingham taking a near second with 802. The five first prizes totaled 1n wash as the contest drew 800 to 400 people to cast guesses, with judges A E Goffiner Mrs Charles Goffinet and Eypesat far rigon. The Grillas plan continued sales growth as five clerks worked all day.
Promoter Henry Pfeiffer of Kenton at a Columbus convention of the League of Ohio Sportsmen described coom hunting with a mix of crude jokes and profanity. He mocked women and used slang about drinking and chasing dogs, remarks reflecting a rough period speech.
Inclement conditions hold up Rittman street paving and sidewalk project. Engineer C C Steiner notes heavy grading mostly done but concrete pouring awaits dryer weather. Red Herring, state street contractor, likely to start operations when feasible. Sewers installed and initial grading finished. both contractors granted time outside July 20 for completion.

Rittman rec board and supervisors outline a full schedule of supervised recreation starting June 1. Planned facilities include new tennis courts lighting, a baseball diamond, and expanded night softball and basketball. boxing shows, amateur bouts, and youth programs will be offered with physician exams for entrants. The nine member board, led by A. Tucciaridi, sets goals for indoor, outdoor, and special activities including a sports round-up on Labor Day and a $1940 annual budget with $1000 from the city and $200 from education.
Mrs W E Heiks was elected president of the Rittman PTA at the annual meeting in the high school auditorium. Other officers include Mrs Herta Miller secretary and O Han treasurer. Grade and junior senior high groups also named new officers. A program on motion picture appreciation and school activities was presented. The retiring president Mrs W W Bodager presided. membership reached 118.
Bettyjane Brophy a Wooster College junior will perform as pianist in the Wooster Symphony Orchestra’s second concert of the season. The program, conducted by Nusie ip, is directed by Prof. Dan Parmele of the Conservatory faculty. Brophy, daughter of Mr and Mrs E J Brophy of 181 Nye Street, studies piano at Wooster. The orchestra, supported by Wooster Federal, awards a $500 annual grant to the ensembles.
