Tragic Death After Erie Freight Strike Near Barberton

Leslie Metzger a 16 year old Rittman youth was fatally injured when struck by an eastbound Erie freight near the depot after alighting from train No 7 Saturday night He died April 7 in Akron of brain concussion The body is being sent to Camden Michigan for interment with services at his home conducted by Rev N D Steffanni Hanes and Ebert funeral firm handling the arrangements

Schmidt Brothers Cleared In Forgery Case Verdict

In Wooster Common Pleas ten days of court culminated with a not guilty verdict for the Schmidt brothers of Winesburg in a forgery case. Complainant Joe Ramseyer of Smithville alleged a $1500 note connected to a farm purchase was forged, a claim disputed by the defendants.

Runaway Freight Wagon Accident Near B&O Siding

Frank Maine of Doylestown was thrown from a fertilizer wagon when frightened by a passing train at the B&O siding. He sustained a bruised head and face as the wagon was wrecked. One horse pulled free, bridle torn, a passerby stopped the team. Moine then returned home in another wagon.

Erie Man Surprises Agent At Birthday Celebration

Erie man Mr A L Conrad, agent at the Erie transfer, marked a birthday with a surprise visit from office staff and families at his South High Street home. Clerical staff praised improvements he brought and presented a traveling bag along with other tokens. The festive evening featured games music and light refreshments as colleagues expressed appreciation.

Council approves sewer repairs and flood cleanup measures

The council met Monday evening with full attendance and ordered sewers and roads damaged by the flood repaired. The street commissioner was authorized to rent a scraper and engine to clear ditches. A motion to rent rooms over the H Weiss clothing store passed. The city engineer was tasked to address the Pleasant View sewer issue near Ohio avenue. An Ohio attorney general opinion states the village cannot take over schools now. a village school district could be formed later, but supervision remains with the township. Bills totaling 105.31 were approved for payment and a notice issued seeking flood service claims. Council adjourned.

U. B. S. S. Faces Canal Fulton In Season Finale

U. B. S. S. hosted Canal Fulton High School in a close season ending game. Fulton High School proved too strong for the local squad, delivering a competitive result despite a less lopsided score than in past meetings.

YMCA Boys Defeat Quinque in Wadsworth Basketball

The YMCA team of Wadsworth won 23 to 15 against Quinque last Wednesday night. The local squad fought hard but was outmatched by the older trained YMCA players.

Mail Lost in Flood as Bridge Collapses

Creston substitute mail carrier Ira Sonedecker attempted to cross a flooded bridge south of town with a load of mail. The bridge gave way and the horse drowned, but Sonedecker escaped unharmed.

John Baker known as Dad Baker, veteran drayman at the Salt Works, celebrated his 70th birthday last Wednesday. He says he feels younger every day and is younger than some men half his age, and well wishes follow for another 70 years of youth.
