City Manager Will Laughlin fired sewer superintendent Virgil Burnette and sewage operator Rex Gott, effective April 1, amid a broader personnel shakeup. He cited repeated ignored directions, poor plant operation, and cost-cutting moves including centralized purchasing and merging sewer and water into a public utilities division. Gary Geigey was named public utilities superintendent with Shiloh Watts assisting.
Two plant workers, Burnette and Gott, fired by City Manager Will Laughlin last week, insist charges cannot be proven and threaten lawsuits. Burnette cites outside daylight work and reduced hours, while Gott claims lunch hour activities are private and questions Laughlin’s management turnover and plant operations. They say they refused to resign and accuse Laughlin of seeking changes at the sewage plant.
Local 150 of the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers sponsors a public forum on Issue 3, a proposed constitutional amendment for apportionment of the State House. A F L C I O representatives from Columbus will attend to take questions. The event is Thursday April 8 at noon and 7 p.m. at Rittman High School.
Donald E. Stepfield of Doylestown Telephone Co. was elected Vice President of the Ohio Independent Telephone Association for 1965 66 at the 70th annual convention in Columbus. He resides in Ritman and joined the Board of Directors in April 1963. E T Loughridge of Mansfield Telepone Co. was elected OITA President for 1965 66. Other officers and directors were reelected, with Wledon W Case Elyria H F Clapper Greenville Robert P Kaufman Continental Frank T Quatman Lima Walter Wellman Leipsic and Robert Wopat Marion on shorter terms. The OITA covers 22 percent of Ohio population and 70 percent of its land area, with 888 independent companies employing about people and paying a $30 million payroll.
Rittman Firemen will hide colored eggs at Central Park on Saturday April 17 for an Easter Egg Hunt. Children up to 12 years compete in two age groups with prizes for gold and silver prize eggs. In rain, event moves to Sunday at the same time. Lawrence Cline leads, Howard Wasson assists, Women of Firemen's Auxiliary prep the eggs.

A Rittman and Wadsworth delegation urged the Welfare Committee in Columbus to favor a bill by Reps Fisher and Dannely creating joint hospital taxing districts across counties. The measure would allow a hospital board to lease facilities to a nonprofit, with statewide applicability, and move toward a final legislature decision if approved. Local witnesses included hospital finance chair Howard Young and Mayor Jack Sommer, with Rittman officials Cona Williams Glenn Parman and Allan Broadhurst also present.
The Fine Arts Foundation closing program featured the Baldwin-Wallace College choir joined by an ancient brass ensemble for a varied evening. Conductor Maurice Casey led a cappella classics and sacred works including Fa Une Canzoné, the Echo Song, Crucifixus, Jubilate Deo, and Paradisium, prompting shifting moods from surprise to reverent devotion and lively excitement.
Council approved an ordinance empowering the city manager to sign an option with the Post Office Department on the North Main Street site beside the Rittman Press. The land is deemed the department’s prime site for a new building with a June 1 removal target for Diversion Hall. The city may see the option exercised this week as plans proceed to let a contractor for construction and lease.
Robert Schmeltzer awarded Driver of the Month for July by the Ohio Trucking Association after he plunged into a flooded ditch to rescue a child. He pulled the child to safety as the current swept through the水.
