The Fine Arts Foundation announced a pledge to buy a concert grand piano for the proposed high school auditorium if voters approve the May bond issue. The purchase would exceed 3000 dollars, with the foundation citing need for a concert-quality space and support for the 1.185 million bond.
Virgil L. Musser president of the Young Democratic Clubs of America will leave Cleveland April 7 for a 10 day visit to Vietnam at the invitation of the Vietnamese government. He will be joined by James Skidmore and Thomas R Van Sickle as they meet Vietnamese youth and leaders in Saigon and Hue with visits to universities and planned reports to the YDCA leadership.
Easter Week in Rittman features two community services on Good Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church and Easter Sunrise at 6:30 a.m. at First Church of God. Speakers include Rev. W. K. McComas, Rev. Lee R. Hance, Rev. W. F. Harris, Rev. B. M. Raper, Rev. C. W. Turner, and Rev. Robert Hanze.
family notes from the 12th annual minstrel show last weekend in the high school gym netted more than 1200 dollars. about 225 people attended the cast party with generous food donations from about 50 PTA members and local merchants. assorted guests traveled from neighboring towns, while misc. mishaps during set painting added to the evening’s humor.
Merchants welcomed a proposed central square redesign shown by a design team led by Henry Chambers and Eugene Smith. They eyed moving parking to the center, a flat canopy over sidewalks, and a skyline walkway with ramps. Cost estimates hinge on an engineering study. a Wednesday meeting will decide whether to fund a full study.
Firemen's Auxiliary and Rittman Volunteer Fire Department sponsor the annual Easter egg hunt at 1 p.m. Saturday in Central Park. Gold and silver eggs marked Prize offer special prizes. 24 prizes total in two age groups. The top eggs finder also earns a prize. If rain forces cancellation, the event moves to Sunday at the same time.
Mrs Betty Johnson Harold 42 and her daughter Caroline Harold Knight 23 and her son Earl Harold 4 were killed when a car collided head on with another vehicle that lost control on a three lane highway. Mrs Harold formerly lived in Sterling before moving to Newton Falls and Southgate Michigan. She leaves two sons Brian and Loren and four daughters Janice Judy Dawn and Sandra. Also surviving are two brothers and several sisters. Mrs Knight leaves her husband Earl and daughter Kelly.
Winfield Scott Miller 85 of Wayne County West Virginia died unexpectedly Monday morning at his home. Services will be Thursday at 2 pm in Freewill Baptist Church Laural Creek with burial in Davis Cemetery. He was a retired carpenter and lived with daughter Mary Francis in Wayne County before moving to Rittman 13 years ago. Survived by son Dewey of Stiltner West Virginia and daughter Cora Gillespie Wheeler sburg plus 32 grandchildren. His wife Florence died in 1952.
Rudy Samic resigns as international representative of the Paper Mill workers in Rittman amid a Teamsters drive to gain jurisdiction over about 1,000 PCA hourly employees. Carter Share of Cincinnati is named his successor and dispatched to Rittman to counter the Teamsters and negotiate a new PCA contract.
City Manager Willaughlin said the engineering firm for six Rittman street paving found an error in its assessment formula and will redo the work. Residents of Metzger Read Mars Warren Sauer and Bradley will receive lower assessments, and a small Metzger section will be removed from the 1966 program. New assessments will be completed next week.
Mrs and Mrs John F Hatfield of Rittman RD will host an open house Sunday April 17 from 2 to 5 pm at First Church of Christ 50 North Main Street to honor their 50th wedding anniversary. They wed April 20 1916 at the Biddles Crystal Spring with Rev N P Weinner officiating.
The Rittman Board of Education will meet at 7 pm on Wednesday at Rittmer High School to discuss home economics concerns and related school matters.
