Tuesday night the High Point city council opened bids for $50,000 in improvement bonds. Alexander Brown and Son of Baltimore Md were the highest bidders, offering a premium of $3,605, total $5,360.5, and were allotted the bonds to fund street improvements. The council hailed the substantial premium as a positive sign for the city.
The editor and family return from a family visit spanning Lincolnton and surrounding N Carolina towns. They travel by car, stop in Mooresville and Mt Mourne, note rapid Lincolnton growth with electric lights and artesian water, visit relatives, recall old homesteads, churches, and the Wyent home, then depart for High Point via Guilford and Mecklenburg counties.
A large audience gathered at the Armory on East Washington Tuesday to hear Senator Lee S Overman of Salisbury discuss Democratic ideals and achievements. Editor W N Keener introduced him and praised the speech as a masterful defense of the party and President Wilson. The Springfield band played as Republicans listened, and a community committee was named to meet Overman.
Telegram from Chicago reports Allen A. Tomlinson of Tomlinson Chair Mfg. Co. died by his own action. He was a healthy young man with a fine salary. Remains expected to reach Avendale tomorrow for burial Saturday. Survived by mother two brothers and three sisters. Father died years ago from lightning at Asheboro.
Miss Bessie Marguerite Pitts married Dr. I Thurman Mann at Wesley Memorial Church in a ceremony led by Rev. G T Rowe. Attendants included Randall Mann as best man and Elizabeth Adams as ring bearer. The couple left for a northern bridal trip after a reception at the Pitts home.
In Ton, Lincoln, Catawba and Cleveland counties, roads are improving. Bridges washed away in July floods will be replaced soon. Farmers prosper with cotton prices around sixteen cents and rising wheat, creamery routes and better farm machinery boosting Catawba, Lincoln and Cleveland counties.
Col. Hi H. Ailton of High Point was named temporary superintendent of the Soldiers Home in Raleigh with Mrs. A L Mixon of Columbia S C as matron. Capt and Mrs W Lineberry retire at their request while the board discusses reorganization toward an infirmary basis and future permanent staffing.
Secretary Garland Daniels of Central Carolina fair in Greensboro says the seventeen year history will see the biggest, most attended event yet with a expanded midway, higher class attractions, larger exhibits of farm and stock products, and a robust racing schedule. Daily highlights include auto day on Wednesday High Point day Thursday schol children’s day and a wild animal and western show. The Oxford orphans performed a creditable auditorium show last night.
J. H. Mason, a traveling man from Charlotte, was brought to the hospital Sunday night after his car turned over between here and Tesville. He suffered back injuries and a bruised hand. his daughter Miss Clara Mason, riding with him, escaped unharmed.
A jury finds J. A. Terry guilty of first degree murder in the July 15 killing of John R. Stewart. Judge Webb remands Terry to jail for sentencing set for December 8, with a 45 day window for appeal likely extending beyond Supreme Court sessions. Mrs. Terry sits beside him as the verdict is read after a three hour twenty minute deliberation.
New Year started yesterday at sundown as local Hebrew community observes Rosh Hashanah. Ten days of penitence follow the first day, concluding Friday of next week.
High Point schools opened with 2 053 applicants up 200 from last year. Main Street 836 Elm Street 535 Grimes 250 Park 215 Fairview 170. 434 entered for first time. Book stores busy ordering about 5 000 dollars worth of texts. Opening exercises featured Supt Marr Mayor Pickett ex Mayor Tate Postmaster Farriss and others at South Main School.
Advertisers promote bank services, furniture, dry goods, groceries, tobacco buying, and farm auctions. Penny Bros. and Thomas Bros. announce a 500 acre King Armfield farm auction near Greensboro on Monday October 16 at 10 30 am with live band. Wachovia Bank advertises another interest period.
In a flurry of nuptials, High Point doctors wed within days of each other. Dr Mann marries Miss Verta Idol on Tuesday night, Dr Coe weds Miss Idol tonight, and Dr Baxter plans a June ceremony with Miss Petty, all in the same brief period.
Advertises coal sales with manager Joe Lee promising best coal for money honest weight and prompt delivery. Urges immediate orders and notes present prices on last page. Mention of J E Kirkman family moving into a new East Washington residence and ground breaking for a Simmons Perry Kirkman building at South Main and Commerce housing a drug store and moving picture house. A Woodmen circle to be organized next Monday at Robertson's store inviting all Woodmen to join.
