Moré Rooms Overcrowded in City Schools Highlight Shortage
The city faces severe overcrowding as Prosperity fills High Point’s five school buildings. At the end of the 1916-17 term 2,004 children are enrolled, many with overfilled classrooms and teachers handling more than 25 pupils. Some rooms run 18 to 21 students per class. Even with new buildings, only about half of eligible children are enrolled and enforcement of compulsory attendance would worsen crowding.
