Paying Contract Let For City Street Improvements

The city council awarded the street improvement contract to Robert G Lassiter and Co of Oxford as the lowest bidder. The bid covered lake asphalt and oil asphalt options at 1.72 and 162 per square yard, with work to include excavation, concrete foundation, and the wearing surface. Piedmont Filler and Stain Co Promoters Form New Enterprise

Broadway Theatre lands top film service for High Point

Manager Wagner of the Broadway Theatre announces the Triangle Service will begin Monday and return every Thursday and Monday. Each show features a five reel fine arts drama and a two reel Keystone comedy guided by D. W. Griffith and Thomas H. Ince. The package includes Paramount and Billie Burke material, promising unexcelled photoplays and a New York quality experience. The cost is high but patrons are urged to support such high class entertainment.

Building Permits Rise in September Totals Near $17,000

Remains Brought From Chicago for Tomlinson Funeral

Friday night the remains of Allen A Tomlinson arrived from Chicago with C F Tomlinson a brother. Funeral services were held Saturday at the home of Mrs C Mauser on North Main Street. Interment followed at Springfield old burying ground. Dr Sylvester Newlin of the Friends church offered a tender tribute to a life ended by suicide.

High Point Sewerage Plant Contract Awarded

A. D. O'Brien of Wilmington won the bid to install High Point's million-gallon-a-day sewerage plant at 14164 dollars, about 4000 under the lowest bid and 12000 under the highest. The project, the largest between Baltimore and Atlanta, will take five months to complete and start soon. Kathleen Petty and Dr. O D Baxter wed at First Baptist Church with Rev. J A Clarke officiating. The couple are well known locally.

Attempted Hold Up at Austin Home During Wedding

A would-be robber appeared Tuesday night at Dr and Mrs J W Austin home during the Mann Pitts wedding. He demanded $50 from the nurse and threatened to shoot her. Startled, she turned on the porch light and the man fled hastily, leaving the nurse unsure of the assailant's race.

Moré Rooms Overcrowded in City Schools Highlight Shortage

The city faces severe overcrowding as Prosperity fills High Point’s five school buildings. At the end of the 1916-17 term 2,004 children are enrolled, many with overfilled classrooms and teachers handling more than 25 pupils. Some rooms run 18 to 21 students per class. Even with new buildings, only about half of eligible children are enrolled and enforcement of compulsory attendance would worsen crowding.
