Miss Venetia Smith announces a fall and winter hat showing today Friday and Saturday at The Milliner on South Main St. Miss Krantz, her longtime milliner, will assist customers with the largest collection yet.
The Dunlap Pony Contest closes Tuesday September 30 at eleven PM with votes turned to judges. Voters may use multiple locations though no last minute rush is advised. Extra tickets and cash tickets offer large vote bonuses before final week straight voting begins. The pony WOODROW is on display at the R B White stable and the drive lists local advertisers backing the campaign. BUILDING activity in the city totals about $70,000 in ongoing projects including homes, a church, and a hosiery mill. Reverend Jeremiah Crowley will give free lectures in Charlotte this week under Jr O U A M auspices.
Trustee R H Wheeler will sell the plant of the Columbia Furniture Co Saturday at noon. L J Young of Burlington underwent appendicitis surgery at High Point Hospital Saturday. Lyceum tickets on sale now for choice seats with a splendid line of attractions this year.
In New York detectives and officials inspected Hans Schmidt’s Tombs cell after he admitted running a counterfeit operation tied to a West 134th street flat. Authorities doubt his claimed insanity and view counterfeiting as one of his many purported schemes. Dentist Dr. Ernest Arthur Muret was jailed on $5,000 bail following last night’s raid.
In a called meeting the High Point council unanimously voted to revoke the license of the negro theater on E Washington Street and tighten Sunday closing rules. Mayor Tate defended policing methods while warning that rough disorderly crowds will face stronger arrests and possible force. Aimed at local vice, the plan includes expanding the police force and marching vagrants out of town.
In the Kuykendall vs Stadiem and Gibson case the court bans the defendant from using his house for any purpose for twelve months. The sheriff is instructed to enforce the order and ensure the premises remain closed. Other defendants are permanently restrained from using or maintaining the building for illegal purposes.
Charlotte has recently bought three cars for the street railway system while The Southern Car Co. reports strong business.
Saturday night Special Officer James W. Witcher was wounded during an incident at a moving picture show. He died Monday after an abdominal wound from a pistol shot. The inquest and trial followed with Chief Ben Ridge and Patrolman E A McGhee present. Witnesses described the struggle with Lorenzo Turner and Lindsay Reed as Witcher was hit while Ridge tended to McGhee. The case remains under jury deliberation.
On September 26 a road meeting is scheduled at Trinity. Barnum and Bailey’s advance car will visit this week to promote the show. Moffitt Furnishing Company opens its Fall and Winter Hats today. You are invited to attend.
A million and a half addition will be made to Revolution Mill in Greensboro, doubling floor space to match that of White Oak Mills. The project marks a major expansion for the facility.
Thaw travels to Concord to face Governor Felker next Tuesday on extradition to New York. If denied he stays in New Hampshire. if granted, U S District Court reviews and possible Supreme Court appeal follows.
