Miss Adelaid Finch McKnight of Thomasville married J Hubert Whicker of Winston last Thursday at the South Street parsonage with Rev. H C Byrum officiating. The town also marked the close of a two week protracted Christian church meeting led by Rev. J W Knight with over thirty new conversions. A Friday East Methodist debating society session in the new basement featured a resolution on European war with the affirmative winning. The city fire department battled a blaze in the Stanton Welch block on North Main Street, origin traced to a vacant lodge room on the second floor, extinguished by chemical engines.

City Schools Open Monday With Large Staff Announced
Monday morning September 28 the city schools will open for reception of students. The term begins under Superintendent Thornwell Haynes with a long list of teachers across several schools including Miss Maud McClees of Durham domestic science, W. M. Marr Bryson City principal, and many educators from Waco Rockingham Asheville and beyond. Teachers are to report by 8 30 and gather at 3 p m for a teachers meeting led by each principal.
