A heated exchange targets Jack Johnson with accusations of financial ruin from boxing costs and a blunt call for his downfall. The confrontation centers on Johnson and his alleged lack of justification for living.
A large crowd gathered for the city schools closing in the auditorium with Dr Lingle of Richmond delivering the sermon on What Will Thou Have Me Do Mothers Day celebrations included carnations from High Point Elks. Monday and Thursday night exercises featured senior orations essays and diploma awards with Turner Cummings and Sarah Richardson winning medals.
Mrs. Abigall Mendenhall died Tuesday morning after a two week illness caused by paralysis. Funeral services and burial sermon were held at Deep River on Wednesday afternoon.
Saturday the newly elected councilmen were conducted into offices and the oath administered to Mayor Tate. He had previously taken the oath through Squire J. M. Sechrest. Mayor Tate announced appointments across departments including Dr. J T Burrus as Finance and Revenue, H Vestal as Police and Fire, J W Sechrest Streets and Cemeteries, J.M Hedrick Water and Sewers, O E Mendenhall Public Buildings, R B Terry Lights and Lighting, J A Eshelman Purchasing, and C D Smith Auditing. The piece expects a good two year administration under Mayor Tate.
The Furniture Exposition runs June 26 to July 12 drawing a record crowd. About 70 000 square feet of floor space is allocated to dealers and home manufacturers to host 20 000 national buyers. The entertainment committee plans strong programs to ensure a successful first showing.
A young unnamed woman stepped from a moving streetcar near Dr. C. E. Reitzel’s home on North Main Street. She sustained serious injuries but recovered from the shock. Dr. Burrus later transported her from the residence after receiving medical care.
The Penny brothers conducted a large land auction Monday selling an 85 acre tract off North Main Street near Mechanicsville known as the E H C Fields land for about $10,000. The Giles property with house and lot sold for $2,300. In the afternoon the Fields property fronting the car line on English Street fetched a good price with several Blair property lots also sold.
The Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association held its regular quarterly meeting at the Manufacturers Club yesterday. The group focused on freight rate discrimination, a major issue as they lead the state in opposing unfair rates.
The Southern Furniture Exposition will run June 26 to July 12 in High Point. A 70,000 square foot building will host 30,000 feet for outside manufacturers and 40,000 for local producers, with invitations mailed nationwide and strong expected attendance.
The City Council re elected Judge Edmunds for two more years on Monday, a deserved compliment to his service.

The Washington Street M E Church prepares to begin building on the pew lot on North Main Street at the old Ham Lindsay home. The architect is drafting plans and bids will be invited before work starts.

Judge Armistead Burwell a leading Charlotte attorney died after a Sunday indigestion attack. He collapsed at his North Pryor street home and passed away this morning at age 74, leaving a prominent record in state and city legal circles.
The Bellevue property, among the city’s most valuable, will be sold by J S Burton next Tuesday at 4 PM. The rear grounds will be divided into residence lots and the hotel building with all brand new furniture and fixtures will be sold, including about 150 feet of ground. Police arrest a woman believed to be responsible for the infant death in J. J. Welch well on East Washington Street. She had worked previously at the location of the crime.
