A reader pleads for a humane society in High Point. They condemn overworked sick and disabled horses, describing abuse with whips sticks and even a board, urging city leaders to enforce laws and protect animals.
The editor urges readers to help mistreated animals, noting horses overburdened and mistreated in the streets. It stresses a humane duty to protect those unable to defend themselves and asks for relief for exhausted, injured animals.
A warning notes registered voters who have not paid poll taxes will be debarred from voting next Tuesday. It urges payment tonight as the last grace period ends.

Br. Buch W. McCain narrowly escaped death when his auto stalled on railroad tracks at High Point Hardwood Company. Waiting for a train to clear, he sped forward as a through freight approached, leaping from the car just before the locomotive struck, saving his life by inches. Witnesses initially feared a fatal outcome.
The Choral Society of High Point will give an entertainment at the auditorium tomorrow night. The leading tenor is direct from London and an interesting program has been prepared. Go out.
In municipal court five cases were disposed Monday morning three for drunkenness and two for retailing. Bud Chambers faced two retailing charges, was acquitted in one and convicted in the other, receiving three months on the road in the latter case which he appealed to the Superior court.
Registration books closed Saturday night at 9 00PM showing 1396 registered across precincts. Expect turnout well below registration with about 1100 votes likely. Also notes Elks Home nearing completion and several local events including a Tuesday wedding and job change, along with streetcar extension work and a parks game result.
The editor and family joined Mr. David Welborn and relatives in Davidson County to celebrate his 73rd birthday. Twenty three attended including three children and several grandchildren, with guests from High Point and Midway. Mrs Welborn has hosted every birthday dinner for her husband for 48 years, and the feast impressed all with its abundance and hospitality.
Paid political advertisement signed by contributors lists mayor Tate's supporters and names six candidates for four wards. First Ward Dr J T Burrus and C E Mendenhall. Second Ward J W Seehrest and J A Eshelman. Third Ward J M Hedrick and R B Terry. Fourth Ward G H Kearns and J H Vestal. The note emphasizes a clean, honorable, businesslike administration.
High Point North Carolina April 29 1913 Fred N Tate invites O A Kirkman candidate for mayor to a mass voters meeting at Industrial Hall Thursday May 1 at 7 30 PM to discuss municipal campaign issues with fair time and courtesy promised.
A fragmentary letter from C A Kirkman expresses gratitude for an invitation to a prominent gathering. The note mentions an industrial meeting and personal observations from the last ten campaigns in search of better judgment and decisions.

Mill owners include J H Adams J E H A and J H Millis. Stephen C Clark reports strong bookings for outside factories at the Southern Furniture Exposition.
Dr Kirkman outlines a reform platform challenging entrenched political machines in High Point North Carolina. He pledges to transfer city control to the people, advocate a commission government, elected recorder and tax collector, and bond issues decided by voters. He stresses economy, education support, and opposition to one man rule and cliques linked to real estate and lawyers.
