Durham March 7 George Washington Watts a Durham multi millionaire capitalist and philanthropist died at his home at 10 15 this morning following an illness dating from March 1920 He was 69 years old nearly 70 in August Watts suffered an influenza attack in March 1920 and underwent several blood transfusions and operations He remained active until 1920 and after a world trip to Japan attended the world Sunday school convention His health declined after a severe March collapse and a stomach hemorrhage was deemed incurable, robbing him of strength
J Elwood Cox of High Point was named to the state highway commission raising questions about his ability to stay on Guilford's highway commission. County attorney and board chair anticipate possible replacement and early action if Cox must resign. Cox’s seat is GOP and High Point is favored for his successor as plans for summer road work grow.
Mrs. J. H. Packer and her young child are seriously ill at their home in the Redding apartments. The Packer family is connected to local photographer J. H. Packer whose North Main street studio above Home Banking Company is closed during the illness.
Miss Linnie Vuncannon aged 64 died Saturday night at her home 401 Smith Street after several months of illness. Born in Randolph County she was a daughter of J P and Eleanor Vuncannon. Survived by brother J C Vuncannon of Topeka Kansas and three sisters Mrs C P Davis Nannie J and Josie Vuncannon. Funeral service by Rev J H Moton Welch Memorial Church was held Monday at the home. Interment followed at Springfield church burying ground.
J Elwood Cox of High Point was appointed highway commissioner from the fifth district to oversee 50 million dollars for North Carolina road improvements. The choice drew favorable comment at home and Cox is noted as a capable financier and member of Guilford County’s road commission.
Dr. Mebane of 501 West street died suddenly Monday night from acute dilation of the heart after several days of illness. Survived by widow Mary Holt Mebane and six children, he was a longtime textile businessman in North Carolina. Funeral arrangements will be announced.
At an annual Commercial Club meeting on Monday afternoon stockholders attended, approving the name Sheraton-Not Altapont for Point's new hotel. Over 65 percent of stock and person represented. active board members reelected and Dr W H McCain added as director for a year.
Tate of High Point told Washington Herald reporters at the twelfth annual Southern Commercial Congress that U S furniture output now exceeds domestic needs and requires foreign markets to keep new factories running. He noted High Point's $5 million annual output, broad product range, and a shift from costly ornate to lighter pieces in mahogany, with demand for quality still rising but audiences seeking lower prices.
Growth watch notes February permits totaling 24,600 for Point area construction. Fire Chief A B Horney reports the value more than doubles January's, with Melton Rhodes Co topping the list for a 10,000 dry kiln. Other permits include dwellings, garages, a four room house, a store front, and an eight point hosiery mill building valued at 1500.
High Point lodge No 1155 B P O Elks elected officers for the year starting April 1. J S Welborn chosen delegate to the grand lodge session in Los Angeles in July with H A Millis as alternate. The group plans to attend the Goldsboro state convention in May likely by special train with the Elks band. Officers listed include Exalted ruler B W Kirkman and trustees, with J S Welborn serving as delegate and Welborn as treasurer.
High Point high school names its debating teams for a state wide triangular meet. Charles W McAnally and Walter Crissman will be negative, Willie Rabinowitz and Frank Cauble affirmative. Preliminary results on Monday afternoon select the final contestants.
Roy Miller, a negro youth, faced a preliminary hearing before Judge Kirkman in municipal court on Monday and was bound over to Guilford court under a $500 bond after probable cause was found. He is charged with stealing about $20 in merchandise from a United States Provision store and was arrested around 3 am by Officer Underwood who found him prowling around. Miller allegedly admitted guilt and directed officers to a hearse in the city where the stolen goods were concealed. he claimed a partner helped but escaped.
Former Charlotte mayor Frank R. McNinch spoke to a large High Point audience Monday night in the high school auditorium. Mayor D. A. Stanton introduced him as a former head of municipal government, praising McNinch's talk on community service and the training work done by national representatives in various communities.
Booster club formed at First Methodist Protestant Church after Sunday sermon by Rev George R Brown on Christian Education. Dr S S Coe chair, W W Idol secretary, and leaders C C Robbins and Captain A M Rankin urged securing a Methodist Protestant college for High Point. local churches and chamber of commerce back the effort.
Data from the Bureau of Crop Estimates show farm cattle losses in value between 1919 and 1921 with 1920 the main year of decline.
