A local voting contest offers $1050 car or $900 cash to the top vote getter plus a $960 cash option. Second place wins a building lot, with many other awards including diamonds, scholarships and watches. Open to all with no cost to nominate, the contest runs until September 30 and features a generous vote schedule and club bonuses.
A nomination ballot offers 2000 votes per properly filled coupon. Each candidate may submit only one ballot. Welch, son of J. W. Harris, is confined to his room with fever.
Kellogg Switchboard Co of Chicago hosted J F Hayden during winter to inspect a new telephone system later ordered by North State Telephone Co for High Point. Central office gear arrived and will be installed in the coming months. The older High Point system matches the standard used in major U S cities, now enhanced by automatic features. High Point gains the first southern installation of this new technology.
The Woman's Club of High Point advances a new Law Department program focused on parliamentary usage and the Legal Statute of Women in North Carolina covering property and earnings. Meetings include discussions and a dramatized novel outline plus current events. Entry requests go to Mrs. Henry Waite or Mrs. Benjamin E. Moore.
The city council prohibits keeping dynamite or blasting powder within city limits unless stored in a secure vault approved by council in a remote location. Violations carry a 5000 dollar penalty per offense and the ordinance takes effect after passage. Introduced as an emergency measure and ratified July 6 1914 with Mayor Frep N Tats presiding.
The Polar Bear Company led by Samuel B. Coffin plans a 60 ton capacity ice and coal plant on the existing site. The 60 by 175 foot building will feature gas engines and large storage for fruit cars, plus a pure cream plant. Construction starts soon and operations expected next season.
Mr P C Penn married Miss Wallie Smith in the McAdoo hotel parlor with Rev Clark of Greensboro officiating. They traveled to Clayton for a brief visit with Penn's relatives. The bride, daughter of W L Smith, Pine Street, is a longtime stenographer at Lyon Furniture Agency. The groom works for W N Coler Co. Friends wish them happiness.
Friends recount Ray Newby’s untimely death in Madison late Friday night due to heart trouble. He worked as an accountant at the Madison bank and his remains were sent through town on July 4 to be buried Monday at Farmers, with Masons and Elks members in attendance.
J Harper Ward died Saturday afternoon at his home near Guilford College after weeks of illness from complications. He was 45, son of the late Solomon Ward, survived by his widow, nine children, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral held yesterday at 3 pm at Hickory Grove. Maj. The text also records resolutions of respect from Chickasaw Tribe No 52 expressing sympathy to W S Clapp on his wife’s death.
