Minister Chas Smith Dies in Squirrel Hunt Accident
Rev. Chas. Smith aged 36, a Baptist minister, was instantly killed Monday afternoon four miles north of town when a broken rail caused his double barreled gun to discharge. He pastored Cloverfield and other churches, lived in Mechanicsville, and leaves a widow Effie, his parents, and two brothers. Funeral held at Green Street Baptist Church with interment in Oakwood cemetery.

Benno Squared With Chief Gray Over Worthless Check
Announcement says Uluel Gray went to Washington to fetch Benno the German baker wanted for a worthless check. He returned alone, having paid the full amount of the check plus costs totaling 180 dollars. His wife took the money to keep him from leaving the city. Benno wore an overcoat and suit described in the report as seized. Benno was arrested by Wash ny officers while driving a wagon. his wife helped manage the escape. Dranes is said to be happy to have his money back, while other merchants face loss.

J Harper Johnston Dies in High Point at 90
High Point honors its oldest citizen J Harper Johnston who died Sunday morning at age 90 after a long, active life. Born November 25, 1826 near Jamestown he married Mary Jackson in 1855 and left four children. A Civil War era tithe master, Mason, and Wesley Memorial church steward, he credited temperance for his long career. Funeral held Monday from Broad Street residence with Masonic pallbearers and large floral tributes.

A bold burglar entered a Guilford County home Monday night and stole the upper false teeth and a ring from a sleeping woman’s finger. The victim claims the teeth were in the mouth the night before and believes the thief may have left the lower set behind. she wishes to avoid gossip and hopes the items may be recovered.

Early Morning Fire Destroys Elwood Hotel Cigar Room
At 3 o clock in the morning a blaze in the Elwood Hotel cigar room, near John Walker's cigars, prompted clerk J. Weaver to sound the alarm. High Point Fire Department contained the fire to the enclosure and smoke filled the lobby. Loss estimated by Walker at about 350 dollars due to suspected wiring fault or a loose match.
