Beginning March 1 North State Telephone Co will link with Bell toll lines enabling nationwide calls from High Point. Bell will maintain long distance booths for prompt message handling as the local company provides enhanced service. The Hject-o-File Co plans to manufacture phonographs alongside other lines.
Mrs. Barbara Brannock died in Michigan last week and her remains were brought to the ancestral home near Snow Hill Virginia and interred Tuesday with the husband and several children and relatives present. She was sister of the late Rev. P F W Stamey of this city and aunt of W L Sta. Surviving brothers include Dr L Stamey of Greensboro J Lee Stamey of Sumas Washington and For Stamey of Payette Idaho and sisters Mrs H Dodson of Pilot Mountain and Mrs J T Herrin of Virginia.
Eugene Jarrett recovers from pneumonia. A. J. Owen sells his home to J. A. Smith of Bessemer City and will move there. Smith is sibling to Venetia and Zillah Smith. R. G. Gregory partners with F. G. Barbee in Barbee Marble Works. City directory lists 13,500 population and notes council payment of 1000 dollars for new street land. B. C. Lambeth buys Welborn farm Route 1 Trinity after selling on Route 4.
A neighbor in High Point Route 4 was swindled by a man who sold a large tobacco box for 125 dollars that upon opening contained mostly dirt. The incident left the neighbor poorer but wiser. Other notes mention Mrs O P Wyer’s continued feebleness and various local visits and ailments.
The notice invites readers to pay ahead for a one year subscription and pass the pink slip to friends if not desired. It markets a combined package including a comic sheet and four magazines valued at $550, offered for $205, emphasizing value for family reading.
A mass meeting of voters at Main Street Auditorium at 7 30 p m will discuss changes to the city charter. An automobile owned by Mrs. O. W. Monroe of Greensboro was recovered Friday evening. Authorities traced the borrower toward High Point and a watch was kept. A stray car was found near the city limits on the Greensboro route. The borrower had departed.
Secretary Daniels asks Senator Overman to arrange a Greensboro stop for the 30th Division en route to demobilization. No reply from Senator Simmons yet. Daniels hopes a Raleigh stop could linger in Greensboro for a royal welcome. The city emphasizes modest requests and wartime service.
High Point high school won two of three games Friday night. The boys defeated Wallburg 12 to 9, and beat Burlington 16 to 11 in the main event. Girls lost to Wallburg 14 to 2. Other notes mention court fines, local business changes, and Lt. Lawrence Matton’s return from overseas service.
