Early returns from 31 of 40 precincts show a strong push for a 2 million road bond in Guilford County with 3,842 votes for and 2,003 against. High Point and Greensboro counties favor bonds by 2218, while rural districts oppose. total estimates place final majority between 1,400 and 1,500.
Mrs. Lil lie Burns Beckerdite wife of E R Beckerdite died Saturday at 3 AM at her Winston-Salem home. She was 56 and formerly lived in High Point where she was born in the Burns house on North Main Street. Funeral Monday at 2 PM at her home with burial in Oakwood cemetery High Point. Survived by six brothers and two sisters including A L Burns J H Burns Lindon Burns Hardis Burns Carson Burns Charles Burns Eugenia Burns and Annie Burns.
E R Suits aged 65 died at his Cloverdale home after a year long illness. A former Southern Chair Co. employee, he is survived by his widow and one daughter Mrs. nne and one 800 red Suits. Funeral set for 11 o'clock Friday at Pleasant Hill church.
Delegation from High Point and Greensboro joined Guilford County commissioners in Greensboro to authorize an immediate cleanup of the county home and to form a five member committee to investigate location plans management and conditions at the almshouse. The panel includes E Sternber ger chairwoman Mrs Glanche Carr Stern A E Tate and commissioners Rankin and Barber.
The Fairview Street School in High Point led by Ossie Davis reports progress from the newly formed Parent Teachers Association. The school has added a manual training department and improved playgrounds amid a drop in vice and economic pressures noted by Superintendent W. M. Marr.
The High Point city council set a new fiscal year tax rate of 76 cents per $100 property and $2.25 per poll, a reduction from last year's levels. Of the property rate 36 cents funds general expenses and interest, 18 cents goes to the school system, and 22 cents covers bonds issued in 1917 1918 and 1919. The poll tax allocates one dollar to current city expenses and interest, 60 cents to schools, and 65 cents to bonds issued in 1917 1919. The new rate takes effect immediately and taxes are due now with penalties if unpaid by January 1, 1921.
J K Hill died Friday at 1 30 pm at his daughter Mrs Flossie Jarrett’s home in the Highland cotton mill village. He was born September 28 1858 in Randolph County and lived there until four months ago when he visited relatives in High Point. Survived by son William Hill of Cumberland County four daughters Mrs Coltrane Mrs Nelson Mrs Lowers and Mrs Jarrett all of High Point one brother H H Hill of High Point and two half brothers Tom Staley of Randleman and Sam Staley of Troy. Funeral at Holiness church in Randleman Sunday at 2 pm led by Rev Mr Wray. Interment in church graveyard. Elks of High Point plan a jubilee minstrel at Orpheum theater January 18 19 led by William Purl, promising top performances.
Sunday speeches across High Point churches promote a drive to raise $6,000 for the Associated Charities. Campaign kickoff Monday targets rapid fund-raising with no door-to-door canvassing, checks to be received by Wednesday night under Mrs. Gurley. Speakers listed at each church include J. J. Farriss, Robert Winfrey, F. N. Tate, G. H. Parsons, T. J. Gold, C. F. Tomlinson and others.
Dugan Embler a prominent Davidson county farmer died Friday at 1 PM at his daughter Mrs Lula Mendenhall's home five miles from High Point He was 84 and had lived all his life in the county The funeral was at Zion church Sunday at 11 AM with Rev Dugan Cox officiating Interment followed in the church cemetery Survived by his widow and daughter Lula Mendenhall
Mayor D A Stanton appointed a committee including W G Shipman and T D Gilliam to gather Christmas funds for High Point fire department members. Fire Chief A B Horney will handle entertainment plans, with a banquet or oyster supper possible. Contributions are voluntary, and officials urge public appreciation for the firefighters’ yearly service.
B H Dyer, father of Mrs F C Sharp of this city, died Sunday night at 7 at his Leaksville home. Apoplexy caused the death. He was 76. Mrs Sharp visited her parents Sunday, left Leaksville at 4 that afternoon, and learned of her father’s death soon after arriving home. She left Monday morning for Leaksville.
Floyd M. Crouse, a Tanenhaus Brothers employee from High Point, was held up by two white men on the Greensboro road near Greensboro. They forced him to surrender $12 after a pistol was flashed, claiming they needed money to buy food. Police are investigating as other attempts were reported Sunday night.
Herman Rudisell, a Black man, convicted in municipal court of assault with intent to kill Bessie Lineberger and sentenced by Judge O Arthur Kirkman to two years in Guilford County jail on county roads. He appealed with a $1000 bond. witnesses testified three shots were fired at Justice's store on November 27.
Master V. L. Creakmore a 45 year old Guilford county resident died at High Point Sanatorium after one week as a patient. He lived on Greensboro road near High Point and is survived by two daughters and one son. He was brother to Mrs. E. J. Welch. Rev. J. M. Hilliard led services and burial occurred at Deep River cemetery.
Captain D T McAbee announces a city campaign to raise funds for winter relief and Christmas aid. Boxes placed in homes and business places invite coins and donations of clothing and vegetables to help unfortunates before Christmas. Local volunteers expect a generous response.
