A very successful term of school ended with commencement week events. Rev L V Slocumb delivered a sermon at the Methodist church. The class night program at Leyfang hall drew a large audience. Commencement May 22 featured speaker Rev C O Troy on Extra Mileage. Fifteen graduates named. Today Friday hosts the annual picnic at Johnson grove if weather permits. Everyone welcome.

Memorial Day at Methodist Church Honors Veterans
Next Sunday Memorial day observances at the Methodist Church invite veterans of all wars to attend. A section will be reserved for veterans and auxiliaries. Services include Sunday school at 10 am, morning worship at 11 am with a sermon titled The Soul of a Nation, Epworth League at 7 pm, and evening service at 8 pm titled Witnesses. Everyone is welcome.

Brown Named Loup City Music Director for 1930 31
Miss Alice I Brown supervisor of music in Potter schools will head the music department at Loup City Nebraska for the 1930 31 school year She turned down offers from Maywood and Ainsworth noting the better position at Loup City Her work in Potter raised music interest and many friends regret her departure but wish her success in the larger role.

Snow No 23 Arrives Amid Warm May Heat
The report notes twenty three snows since October 29, 1929 through May 17, 1930 with hopes of no more as temperatures reach about 90 degrees. Saturday brought a wet snow equaling nearly an inch of rain which melted on Sunday. May 1–21 precipitation totals reach 3.63 inches in this period.
Several Cars Figure in Wrecks This Week
A dozen or more cars were damaged in wrecks and tip-overs across the community this past week with no serious injuries reported. Eddie Wickhorst reportedly collided head on with four Californios near the Ash Grove school site due to snow on his windows. A large vehicle overturned at the cattle-gate crossing on the detour west of town, and another wreck occurred near the Stormberg farm. no fatalities were noted.

New Chestnut Street Crossing Under Rapid Construction
The Chestnut street crossing is rapidly going in this week with George Jung and his gang holding the contract to fill 700 yards of dirt on the south side. Two rail cars delivered gravel to complete the crossing between the rails and the north approach as railroad workers relocate the signal bell two blocks east. The crossing should be usable soon.

Prize Winners Announced in Prohibition Essay Contest
The W C T U conducted a prohibition essay contest for students with Opal Bovee winning the eleventh and twelfth grade prize and Marie Robertson the sixth grade prize. Bovee spoke on Business Advantages in Keeping Free from Alcoholic Drinks while Robertson spoke on Our Nation's Prohibition. Prizes were awarded on Wednesday and Evelyn Mayer, Evelyn Anderson and Erma Bartlett received honorable mention with their essays to be published later.

Sophomore Class Presents Bridge Set to Sponsor Mr Nealy
The Sophomore class gave their sponsor Mr Nealy a bridge set and hosted a joint party with the Freshman class last Wednesday. Dix Graduates Receive Many Honors
The eighth grade graduation of district No. 2 was held at the Presbyterian church on May 14. Eleven graduates received diplomas. Melvin Gunderson placed first in written spelling in the county contest. Elvada Peterson had the highest average in county examinations, 90. LaVerne Schmidt earned the second highest average. Juanita Goding and Phyllis Ehlers received honorable mention. All four posted averages above 90. Dix credits Mr. Elmer Johnson for strong instruction and notes he will not be on the faculty next year. The Potter-Sidney game was postponed due to wet grounds. Potter will play at Bunker Hill next Sunday. Bunker Hill defeated Lodge Pole 9 to 3 in Cheyenne county league.

Death claims another respected citizen Carl Harmsen
Carl Harmsen, 68, of the area north-west of Brownson, died after a brief illness on his 68th birthday. Born May 17, 18—, in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, he married Elsie Myer in 1888. Surviving: Edna Ulitis and Alma Bartels, and Edwin Hugo, plus August, at home. He moved to Nebraska 45 years ago, living in Deshler, Lexington, and Cheyenne County. Funeral at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Rice Funeral Home of Sidney in charge.
