The Panhandle of Nebraska lies mostly outside tornado zones but storms occur. A federal bulletin outlines actions to take when a tornado threatens. Move rapidly at right angles to the storm’s path, escape by car if possible, or seek shelter in a tornado cellar or basement, preferably near the wall opposite the oncoming storm, then lie flat if no protection exists. Tornadoes most often strike in May and June.
