Meager reports show rain across a broad northern valley area with amounts from a quarter to over half an inch. The system lingered, bringing overcast skies and the potential for more rain, marking the first moisture since March 28.
The McKinney family returns Thursday after visiting Ravenna Grand Island and other points in the region. They traveled to meet relatives and inspect local happenings while away.
Potter Bearcats fell to Ft Warren 6 to 2 in an exhibition as the 20th Infantry team dominated with pitching and power. Fowler and McClure teamed for the soldiers while Subry and Raddatz played for Potter. Sidney beat Pine Bluffs 8 to 2 and Peetz defeated Bunker Hill 2 to 1 in league games. Next Sunday Kimball visits Pine Bluffs and Potter goes to Bunkerhill with open dates for Peetz and Sidney.
John Avis DIX left for Omaha on business while Wayne Straw returned from there. Julieta Goding came back from a Mexico tour and reported a wonderful trip. The Auxiliary met at Mrs J E Godling with nine members and three visitors. A picnic at Point of Rocks involved several families. The Spencer family was released from quarantine Wednesday morning.
After their regular meeting on June 6, the Royal Neighbors were invited up to Neighbor Sloan's home where they all enjoyed an interesting program and delicious refreshments. Olive Sloan and Burnace Wiekhorst were hostesses.
Nebraska teachers shifted from male scarcity to parity with women per Federal Writers' Project notes. Early editors blamed pay gaps, while pupils in 1881 wore revolvers and teachers used birches to quell misbehavior. Higher education faced finances, even advertising tuition in hay.
A long list of visits and calls among Antelope families. Mr and Mrs Dewey Larson and others, including the Nelsons, Olsen, Whitneys, and Pettersons, spent evenings and afternoons at various homes. Guests traveled to Scottsbluff and San Francisco while local clubs met and neighbors shared refreshments.
Cheyenne county farmers battling grasshoppers face a halt as federal hopper bait funds are exhausted and state funds were denied by the unicameral legislature. Agricultural Agent Swinbank warns bait materials will run out by Monday but expects two more cars of sawdust and bran soon. O.S Bare notes emergency funds are being sought from the federal government with no confirmation. Farmers report 25,000 to 40,000 pounds of bait dispatched daily from Sidney for three weeks with good kills but growing concern over shortages.
Last week and this week residents shared Sunday and weekday calls at friends and family homes. Notable names include Frei Prince Spencer Dvorak Nielsen Mathewson Heimer Olsen Nelson and Wm Hagemeister. Virgil Nelson left for Charlestown to resume navy duties after a two week visit.
Potter Nebraska village trustees meet June 5 1939 approving opening the Legion park softball field with bulbs and current supplied by the village Joel Schwartz to oversee grounds for season while limiting play. The board approves an annual appropriation with mill levies and rescinds a prior disapproval of Charles Sleeth from the volunteer fire department. Multiple village bill payments are approved with one exception L F Lafferty meter deposit. Adjournment follows.
A 75 year old Federal Writers Project account notes that a Nebraska farmer faced with a corn crop doomed by thousands of wild geese devised a drastic method. He soaked shelled corn in whiskey, attracting the birds which became intoxicated and easy prey for neighbors with clubs, ending the threat.
Mrs. Alex Spencer expresses gratitude to friends for cards and messages received during illness and for the kindness shown to her family during this time.

Separately, Mrs Lee Hagemeister’s family held a reunion from Saturday through Tuesday with relatives from Grand Island Burbank Pawnee City and Burbank California in attendance.
The Metho dist Sunday school junior girls enjoyed a Thursday afternoon party at Joyce Juells home with teacher Mrs. Dewey Lovell. They spent the time in games and had a delicious lunch.
Tonight in Bayard near Chimney Rock the religious pageant The Gift of God reaches its final 1939 showing. The event is presented four nights each year and draws many locals as well as visitors who plan to attend if weather permits.
The annual Farmers Union picnic at Johnson Grove drew large crowds from the north and south locals and was reported as well attended and enjoyable. Many local residents will attend the county picnic in Sidney this Thursday as well. Potter and Gurley ball clubs are scheduled to play nearby.
Mr and Mrs Fred L Herman and children of Greeley Cole spent Tuesday at the home of Mr and Mrs Roy L MacAdam Allan Herman will remain in Potter for the summer Harriet MacAdam returned with them to Greeley for a week's visit with her cousins
Dr. Rothman of Veterans hospital Cheyenne was a guest of Mr and Mrs Clarence Johnson at dinner Sunday and visited many of the hospital’s former patients. He was en route home from a vacation in the east.
John Chapman and his family moved into the former Fricke place in the town's northeast. Mr and Mrs LeRoy Gunderson moved into the John Miller property, which was vacated by the Chapmans.
Bernice Leyfang of Potter will be the almanac editor of the Western Graphic, the all American college newspaper of Colorado Woman's College, for the next year.
Walter Schubarth was admitted to a Sidney hospital Friday with an infected foot. Mrs. Hanna Smith of Bayard visited last week with Mrs. S-S- Morrow. Joe Gerler and daughter, with Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gerler and children, left for Wittenburg Mo. for their father John Gerler’s death. Mrs. Carl Mueller and baby son were dismissed from Sidney hospital. J. B. Morrow visited Jim Wolek. Walter Bredehoff and family of Sterling Colo. visited Wm. Stien. J. B. Morrow called on John Heimer. Walter and Elmer Hilpert, Walter and Rudolph Schubarth, Art Mueller, and Leo Steffens fished at Northport Thursday. Farmers Union picnic drew many from the community to Johnson grove Sunday. Art Schubarth and Art Schussler families returned from Perry County Mo. Viola Schubarth, recently in St. Louis, returned home with them. Mrs. Edna Lungwitz and Carol visited sister Mrs. Anton Steffens. Louie Seeman and children were guests at Art Schussler Sunday. Walter Schubarth was discharged from Sidney hospital Thursday.
