The December weather brought 0.85 inches total precipitation across several states with a four hour rain event turning to sleet and snow. Cheyenne reported 1.21 inches while northern areas saw six inches of snow by Monday night. temperatures rose to 45 by Wednesday noon as snow began melting and prospects for 1938 crops look brighter.
The Methodist Sunday School holds its annual Christmas program on Thursday December 23 starting at 7 30 pm Recitations and musical numbers are planned A Santa Claus will be present and free treats will be offered to children The public is invited
Christmas edition notes a town wide holiday offer with free electric service for two weeks starting Monday for Potter light plant customers and a separate arrangement for AGL Dix. December bills will reflect the policy, with meters read December 20 and January 3, to cover usage through January. The move aims to brighten the season and promote good will with decorative lighting.
A large attendance gathered for the county Legion and Auxiliary meeting on Wednesday evening. About eighty ex-service men and Auxiliary members attended, with delegations from Sidney, Dalton and nearby communities. Key speakers included Carey of Dalton, county Legion president, Rachel Jacobs of the Auxiliary, department vice commander L. Schwartz, and local commander Ralph Robertson. Rev J J Sheaff of Iatey delivered the main address, and Sidney’s delegation featured Link Lyman with his ball pictures. Dalton’s orchestra provided music.
Victim Leafdale of Potter receives best wishes on his 89th birthday Friday December 10 with friends and family visiting. Leaves health and activity praised as relatives arrive for a bounteous meal plus gatherings at the home of Mr and Mrs Pardale Seluded My and Mrs A M fide.
The Chick Boyes players present the theatrical comedy Tumbleweed in Potte on December 23 featuring comedian Billy Cornish. Candy will be sold homemade at 30c per pound during the holidays by Mrs B J Pavlat.
At a well attended meeting last Thursday evening the local chapter of the Order of Eastern Star elected officers for the coming year. Mrs. Ella Enevoldsen was named worthy matron with Emil Nelson as worthy patron and Mrs. Miriam Reichstein as associate matron. George Thirlwall became associate patron, Mrs. Viola Miller secretary, Mrs. Melba Biggs treasurer, Mrs. Edna Johnson conductress, and Mrs. Mildred Johnson associate conductress. Installation is set for Thursday January 13.
Potter Lodge No 313 A F and A M elected officers for the coming year at a well attended meeting Tuesday evening. Officers named include Mayer as Master, MacAdam as Senior Warden, Wickhorst as Junior Warden, Enevoldsen as treasurer, and Seyfang as secretary. Installation set for January 11.
Sunday schedule posted with iBible school at 2 00 p m and worship with sermon at 2 45 p m. Bring friends to the service.
Methodist Church led by Pastor R. Tanner invites worshipers to Christmas Sunday services. An 11 o'clock sermon, special music, and a Christmas story titled The man who was too busy to visit the child will be featured. Young people's choir to sing carols. church school program time to be announced.
Twin boys arrived Sunday December 12 1937 to Mr and Mrs Gene Schmidt living south of Potties. Their weights were four and five pounds. Mother and sons are at a hospital in Ovid Colorado and all are reported doing nicely. Names not yet ascertained. Congratulations.
A telephone line was installed this week at the Griffin Garage to serve the garage and the Continental Oil company. The number assigned is 44.
The district announces a December 23 1:30 pm Christmas program in the high school assembly. One large show will replace multiple room presentations to let families attend all rooms. Students will contribute songs plays readings and more for a unified program and parent participation.
The senior glee clubs present a December 22 Christmas program at the high school auditorium. The program features dramatized songs illustrating the birth of Christ with no admission charged and aims for a full crowd. The lineup includes solos, cantata Hail Holy Babe, and a large cast with stage managers and an accompanist.
Potter drew a bye for the Friday afternoon pre season try-out basketball tournament at Sunol. Sunol also drew a bye but will meet Potter at 7:00 p.m. Other teams entered include Lodge Pole, Lisco, Gurley, Dalton, Broadwater, Bushnel and Goodview. The event emphasizes practice over a championship.
A large electric star with over 20 bright colored lights has been erected above the M, BE, church cupola and will be lit each night during the holidays. Additional strings of colored lights decorate the cupola for a festive display visible from afar.
A pinochle party at the Clarence Rogers home was followed by a late hour lunch. Prizes went to Roy Jacobson and Mrs. Kenneth Rose, with Lloyd Juelfs as consolation. Guests included numerous couples and individuals such as Mr. and Mrs. Juelfs, Roger McGowan, Ted Carlson, Ray Fisher, Maxine Nekert, Roy Jacobson, George Allison, and Ed McGowan.
Representatives from several organizations attended the county charity reorganization in Sidney last Friday. Named were John Witt for the Village Board, D F Evenolds on for the Community Club, Wm Tred Arnell for the American Legion, Hagemeister for the Red Cross, AJ Ford Wickhorst for the County Commissioners, and H Stevens among others.
D F S Enevoldsen and family spent Sunday at Farnum for the silver wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Martinus Erevoldsen. Twenty eight relatives were present.
George Coulter of the west of town lost four head of cattle one morning this week after they strayed onto U P tracks and were struck by a westbound zip train. The cattle included two milk cows one steer and one bull. They were killed instantly and the train continued on its way with no damage presumed.
Village trustees announce an ordinance prohibiting attaching sleds to vehicles to protect public safety and prevent accidents. The measure was enacted to reduce injuries and is issued by the village chairman.
Potter Chapter of HES welcomed twenty one Job's Daughters Bethel members and several parents on Friday. The girls demonstrated their initiatory work in a beautifully done ceremony as about sixty people attended the evening gathering.
The west town area is blocked off for children with sleds as deep level snow makes coasting exceptionally good this week. Adults join in and the scene hints at a strong demand for sleds and sleighs if the snows persist.
Citizens praise the municipal tree at the north intersection and the strings of colored lights across Chestnut Street. The lights enhance the holiday spirit and will remain burning each night until after New Year’s Day.
