Commander Lyon Cleared Guantanamo Bay of Spanish Treacherous Mines
Commander Lyon of the Dolphin led a risky mine clearance in Guantanamo Bay. Two steam cutters towed Whaleboats and a 50 foot chain swept the bay surface, lifting torpedo anchors while Lyon credited others for the feat. Ensigns William Cole and Yates Stirling Jr. commanded the boats amid near perils. On June 6, 1898, near Santiago, Lyon shelled a train of troops moving along the shore as the Dolphin cruised east of the harbor.

Flag Day Observances Highlight American Flag History
June observances recount the flag’s birth in 1775, with John Paul Jones and later actions, the 1794 to 1818 changes raising stars to 46, Wendover’s 1816 proposal, and the Bedford flag of Concord linked to the shot heard round the world. The piece notes enduring symbolism, wars, and legal limits on markings.
