Secretary Wilson says President Roosevelt must run again and will likely win. The West is said to be strongly behind him, with speculation and club formations spreading across the Pacific Coast as supporters push for a formal candidacy to lead the Republican Party to victory.
San Francisco July 31 The Columbia steamer accident is traced to both boats running at full speed in dense fog. Directions to captains urged haste despite weather. Public opinion denounces steamboat owners as reckless and demands drastic measures to prevent future accidents.
Deputy Assessor John D Flanagan started downtown to begin duties for the year with City Clerk Lucas acting as assessor. Lucas expects a larger tax roll due to patents granted for previously una assessed lots, though the duo faces a heavy workload before the September board of equalization convenes.

He will turn office to Frank Kolash but remains postmaster until the department accepts his resignation, with current Nome clerks funded by a departmental wiggle room. The department warned Swanton in June 1907 that continued absence is unacceptable and suggested resignation. Swanton’s move reflects congressional recess appointment practice.
