F Aldrich and others describe Cape Rodney bluff as a solid mass of gold bearing quartz. They note assays of about 1.50 per ton show limited returns and reject rumors of rich finds. Despite modest results, Aldrich says prospecting proves the country has been worked but not exhausted.
In September, weather permitting, W. L. Goodwin will place seven foot iron posts with red-painted tin flags along the route from Lane's Landing to Candle via Taylor and Dahl creeks.
Father Camille 8 J. who officiated at St. Michael died suddenly at the fort early this week and was buried yesterday. A doctor was summoned but he had already passed. He had formerly served at Nome and friends mourn his loss.
Inoko Diggings produce no arrivals from Innoko or Hoholima. H W Reeth rode the Gusste Brown upriver on the Kuskokwim and brought back a map and quartz samples to C D Cochran. Three placer claims are active on Gaines Creek with a claim staked on French Gulch. Captain Lupp notes $3.75 float quartz from his site. The Gussie Brown plans to return tomorrow night weather permitting.
Lokke and Bergland prepare to open the ground between Nos. 4 and 6 on Dry creek area as an outfit is shipped out and work to begin at once.
Nome Nugget appeals to District Attorney George B. Grigsby to investigate alleged law violations by the Seward Peninsula Railroad Co, citing the 1893 and 1903 acts on brakes and automatic couplers. The letter claims daily operations since navigation opened in 1907 breach the law, risking accidents, and offers evidence to aid prosecution.
Quartz veins carrying visible gold were found on Nome Mining Company ground at Saturday Creek. Manager Powell denies major richness, noting veins were uncovered last year and he showed samples only to some visitors. Observers say gold is visible throughout the rock and vein size could determine value.
A special meeting of the Knights of Robert Emmett will be held at the offices of Dr. Ed Hill tomorrow Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. All members are requested to be present. A MGETTIGAN secretary.
W H Hesse, director of United States Alaska Tin Mining Co, forecasts first US mined tin from Cape Prince of Wales. A Seattle or Tacoma tin smelter will be built next winter with over 200000 dollars of capital, and operations begin soon to process concentrates from the company’s property. An aerial tramway is under construction to reach the mine, with a 600 foot depth vein being developed and a tunnel of 300 feet to connect. Mr Hesse will depart for the site shortly.
July 31 reports describe widespread forest fires around Seattle with incalculable damage. Dry conditions fueled outbreaks destroying timber properties and surrounding farms, burning buildings and a logging camp beyond Lake Washington. Damage amounts reach hundreds of thousands of dollars. A court result notes Tom Oleson fined ten dollars for drunkenness.
The Gussie Brown arrived today from Bethel after a severe voyage. Passengers report rough weather and an eight day crossing to Bethel, then a downstream trip on the Victoria. At the river mouth more bad weather forced four days in shelter and a four day stop for inspection before reaching Michael. Passengers praise Captain Lupp for expert handling and presented him a testimonial.
John Hancock aboard the Gussie Brown from Bethel says reports heard about the Snnoke and Hobokiths are favorable.
The Japanese Chamber of Commerce warns Seattle residents through the Seattle Chamber of Commerce to prevent alleged mistreatment of Japanese people, signaling possible boycotts of American goods if ignored. A passenger went insane during a rough voyage on the steamer Santa Clara near Cape Flattery. A heavy sea flooded decks and rooms, prompting a mass evacuation to lifeboats while the captain calmed passengers and continued to Seattle where the disturbed man was confined.
W L Goodwin district roads superintendent plans a field survey near Safe ty and Bonanza to guide potential improvements. Funds are limited but a later project is hoped. Elizabeth Wood executrix sues Herbert Gray in district court for 1000 dollars claimed as a retaining fee plus 131 50 for expenses alleged to have been incurred for Gray’s benefit. F M Clowes represents the plaintiff.
